idNerd Studio exhibits their original animated content at Asia's largest film and entertainment market, the HKTDC's Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (FILMART)

Hong Kong (MMD Newswire) March 14, 2016 — idNerd Studio is taking part in Asia’s world famous film and entertainment fair from the 14th to 17th of March, 2016. HKTDC’s Hong Kong International Film & TV Market, FILMART, will be held at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) in Wan Chai, and feature film makers, producers and other industry experts.

Although hundreds of companies participate in Hong Kong FILMART, booths at FILMART with a focus on 3D animation have often been limited to foreign companies in Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and so on. idNerd Studio is one of the few, local specialists in original 3D animation. Moreover, this Hong Kong studio is trying to accomplish something that only few in Asia can lay claim to: Creating original animated contents, with local 3D animators.

At FILMART, idNerd will be showcasing five of their original animated TV series concepts, which are open for children’s TV production or alternative investment: Anti-Hero Squad; Battlelicious; Unleashed; VR Drone Rider; and Monster Olympics. The studio hopes to appeal to a wide range of target markets with these five offerings and collaborate with interested investors in these exciting TV series.

Currently, idNerd hosts a dedicated team for script writing and treatments, 2D and 3D animation, concept art design, as well as post production services artists. Their design directors have overseas animations background which allow us to mentor new local talents and bring them up to international standard. idNerd Studio is part of an emerging movement in the Asian animation industry, where there is a desire for local animation content in film and TV.

Since the 1960s, most western studios have outsourced their animation production to Asia. Western studios have always been attracted to the relatively stable and cheap labour that comes from production in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and elsewhere in Asia. This has meant that although American television animation has flourished due to Asian production houses, regional content in animated film and TV has not seen its heyday. Japan may be the only standout exception, with their high local anime demand, together with the overseas influence of its 2D anime and ‘the Pokemon Phenomenon’.

idNerd is the labour of love of two Hong Kong brothers, Peter Wong and Jacky Wong. The incentive for such a studio in Hong Kong stemmed from Jacky’s flourishing career as an animator in Canada. During that time, his pivotal roles in north american productions like Storm Hawks and Hot Wheels Battle Force 5 drove home the importance of having a studio in Asia that could compete creatively.

Peter Wong, is a fully qualified airline pilot, as well as a vivacious technology entrepreneur and investor, he was keen to invest in his brother’s artistic aspirations. To Peter, the lack of 3D animated series for the Chinese and Asian market was startling. Beyond 2D anime, Asia was lacking in original 3D animated works.

“I want the world to stop seeing Asia as just a factory for Western animations. What usually happens is all the pre-production – all the creative stuff – gets done in the US or Europe, and then it’s sent as a package to Asia to produce. Of course we can produce animations faster and cheaper. But why do western studios get to have all the fun? We’ve got some amazing, natural creative talent in Hong Kong, as well as the rest of Asia. We’ve got stories that we know will appeal to the Asian market. So why not utilise that creativity?” says Peter Wong, Managing Director at idNerd Studios.

idNerd Studio Executive Producer Jacky Wong explains, “Battlelicious is a foodie’s series, with students running around the mystical castle learning about different – mostly Asian – cuisines. And then you have VR Drone Rider, which is a boyish fantasy- drone racers with unique skills and item builds, racing around the world’s greatest cities for adrenaline-fuelled glory. There’s really something for everyone in what we’re showcasing at FILMART.
