Fear and confusion reigns - Welcome to... Planet of the DOLTS!

“Fear and confusion reigns”,  is a slogan the “Earth Intergalactic Travel Agency” could use when advertising the merits of our deceptively beautiful and tranquil looking planet to extraterrestrial travel markets.

Our planet is a bit of a conundrum in that it is enormously blessed with all the good stuff of and for life, some might say it is an idyllic spot in the loneliness of  otherwise bleak and hostile space. We include aesthetically pleasing vistas to boot… complete with a dizzying array of diversity, however there is a dark side – us… with our bizarre and illogical self-destructive behaviors!

We, the inhabitants should… on the surface be a “soft sell” to intergalactic travelers who would be envious of the native specie who call this miraculous oasis in space – home, but would they be, and if not, why not?

Unlike the millions of other specie on the planet, (we, humanity) for some reason have an irrational compulsion to “improve” on what we were given. Making things look and feel nice is a good quality though and should be heartily endorsed by all, at least up to a point.

Howsoever…

There comes a developmental stage where the potential for improvement can and always will reach a point where the “quest for improvement” effort becomes counterproductive and negative result occurs, we call this effect “unintended consequence.” Some of us are quite adept at seeing the risk of unintended consequence, some of us–not so much.

Even as our improvement explodes in our face, we still insist on calling it “progress.” Anyone who disagrees is scoffed at and vilified, we are literally bullied into accepting travesty, cruelty and insane approaches or face peer group attack.

Experience demonstrates… if hyper-improvement is sufficiently pursued one reaches a point where a collective insanity overshadows prudent progress, it is at that point we become “Planet of the DOLTS” and the phrase “fear and confusion reigns” becomes increasingly evident in our communications. The reason is, we have overreached our level of competence and descend into a spiral of self-destruction and demise for all.

Today I listened to a lady on a popular a.m radio talk show who had reached a point where she wondered if we are sufficiently prepared to weather large catastrophic events, or whether most of us take personal survival in times of extreme duress… too lightly? The topic was inspired by a litany of catastrophic events experienced in the past couple of years topped off by the current events of Japan which features Earthquake, Tsunami and Nuclear Reactor Meltdown.

For about a Milli-second I considered calling in with a comment, just as quickly I realized the futility.

I would be talking to folks who think “Ring of Fire” and “Nuclear Reactors” as companions… is a fine idea.

The problem with discussing cognitive dissonance with the afflicted is they are not equipped to comprehend their condition or the issues of it and so it is a fruitless endeavor. The folks who are happy in the madhouse are not likely to be supportive of any alternative and will invariably fight to keep the house mad and occupied and located in an epicenter location.

I am always amazed when people tell me things in the world are normal and as they should be… I am in the minority so perhaps it is I whom is misguided.

My question is… what specie, other than humanity enthusiastically pursues, endorses and supports its own loss of fundamental freedom, capitulates to faulted leadership, constructs and implements ill-advised and reckless “progress”, booby traps its own environment, destroys its own range, decimates companion specie while adamantly ignoring the obvious impacts and ramifications to their own well being?

If it is only us, the intelligent specie, why?

For the situationally aware amongst us I can only say… remain cognizant of everything around you and keep your own council. The system and approaches used by it are unlikely to change, personal well-being is a personal responsibility, there are always ways and means to mitigate, reduce and diminish the risks presented by “nature” – which includes the dysfunctional neighborhood you live in or visit.

The cost of having i-Tech toys is this….
