The Second Coming will not catch the children of light unaware

“And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” Luke 6:46

In addition to telling his disciples to love and forgive one another Jesus commanded them to watch. He did not insist that they be right as far as the exact timing of events and in fact gave parables depicting a ‘delayed’ return and certainly an unexpected one for most of the world…so likely prophetic timelines will be adjusted by watchers until the very end of the age.

In Matthew 24 his disciples came right out and asked “what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?” Jesus’ answer consumes the next 38 verses followed by the admonishment “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.”

²⁸Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:

²⁹So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors.

³⁰Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.

³¹Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

³²But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

³³Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.

³⁴For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.

³⁵Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:

³⁶Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.

³⁷And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

¹But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

²For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

³For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

⁴But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

⁵Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

⁶Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
