VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis urged members of all religions and those belonging to no church on Wednesday to unite to defend justice, peace and the environment and not allow the value of a person to be reduced to “what he produces and what he consumes”.
Yahya Pallavicini, a leader of Italy’s Muslim community, said he was impressed by the pope’s insistence of inter-religious friendship.
Francis, elected a week ago as the first non-European pope in 1,300 years, met leaders of non-Catholic Christian religions such as Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans and Methodists, and others including Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus.
“The Catholic Church is aware of the importance of furthering respect of friendship between men and women of different religious traditions,” the Argentine pontiff told the religious leaders in an audience at the Vatican.
Speaking in Italian in the frescoed Sala Clementina, he said members of all religions and even non-believers had to recognize their joint responsibility “to our world, to all of creation, which we have to love and protect.
“We must do much for the good of the poorest, the weak, and those who are suffering, to favor justice, promote reconciliation and build peace,” he said.
Francis told the religious leaders to fight “a one-dimensional vision of a human person, according to which man is reduced to what he produces and what he consumes,” which he said was “one of the most dangerous snares of our times”.
While he said history had shown that any attempt to eliminate God had produced “much violence,” he reached out to those who seek truth, goodness and beauty without belonging to any religion.
“They are our precious allies in the commitment to defend human dignity, build a more peaceful coexistence among people and protect nature with care,” he said.

I find nothing wrong with what the Pope said. He is appealing for world peace and universal care for the poor — a standard papal exhortation. He is not endorsing a “one world religion” under a false banner of ecumenism.

My Anonymous friend, I’m afraid you are mistaken about Roman Catholicism. It is NOT the only true religion. That is Christianity and the various denominations that comprise it. CHRISTIANITY was founded by Jesus Christ if you want to think of it in religious terms (I personally don’t but that’s neither here nor there at the moment) and not Roman Catholicism. I see many things in Roman Catholicism that do not match up with Scripture, the almost worshipful attitude toward Mary being one of them. Mary is not worthy of such extreme devotion. Now, please do not mistake me. I’m not saying Mary is a prostitute or a horrible person or that she was this or that. But the level of fanatical devotion granted by the Catholic Church, especially this “Queen of Heaven” business, is troubling to say the absolute least. It has no Biblical precedent, nor do prayers to her or the saints, which I personally count as blasphemous. Jesus taught us how to pray. Nowhere in the prayer was there the words “and I pray to saint so-and-so.” or “and to those who are most worthy” or some other method of denoting sainthood. If you want the true BIBLICAL definition of a saint, it is any member of the Body of Christ. That’s right. If you are in Christ, you are automatically a saint, no dying and canonization required. I also take issue with things I’ve read in the glossary in the back of my Catholic Bible (I grew up Catholic, actually) that implied, for one example, that the stigmata (which I do not believe is from God in the first place after giving it careful consideration) was a method by which the person who endures it ASSISTS in Christ’s salvation of the world! This is absolutely blasphemous, as it implies that Christ is not entirely sufficient to take the price of the sins of mankind squarely on His shoulders and requires the aid of mere humans to accomplish it. In no way is that true. Also, this issue of transubstantiation makes no sense. It cannot literally be His blood and His body, given that this is, if you think on it honestly and without bias, cannibalism. I also take issue with the importance of tradition in the Catholic church. That it is considered on a level with Scripture itself is extremely troubling. NOTHING is on par with the very word of God. It stands alone against all else that would seek to exalt itself above it, because it is the word of the very living God Himself. Can human traditions ever hope to compare with that? I do not believe so. Humans are faulty (even the Pope. I don’t believe for a moment in papal infallibility) and we are prone to faulty decisions. It just happens. I take issue with much more, especially the ritualistic nature of much activity in the Catholic Church as well as the need for a priest for reconciliation with God, which I see nowhere in scripture as well. I go to God directly with my repentance and I am forgiven my sins without any priest interceding and telling me what rote, memorized prayers to recite or what good works I should do that will earn the favor that was always a free gift, the grace of God. In short, no matter the good intentions, and wonderful start the Catholic Church may have had, it has drifted significantly from that place of Christ’s true church. I hold no single denomination to be “the” denomination. I am now a Baptist but I see presbyterians and methodists and many others as being Christian and therefore equally within the bounds of salvation. The fact remains salvation is individualistic. It’s between you and Jesus, and happens when we come to Him on our own and submit ourselves entirely to His lordship, repenting of our sins. For me, that was at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. For others it’s in a church, but there are saved and unsaved in any church building you care to see. No one denomination has the corner of the salvation market. I hope you will give my arguments due consideration and not dismiss them as “Catholic bashing” because, if you are willing to notice, I specifically did my best to refrain from saying “this is stupid” or “fools follow this” or things of that nature.
