Do Dogs Go To Heaven?

I gave this article this title because it is about my dog Frodo. See notes at the end of this article.

A little over ten years ago my daughter brought home a little puppy that she saw on the side of a busy road one night. He was cold, wet, frightened and so little you could hold him in your hand. My wife picked him up and snuggled him. He found comfort by getting under her hair and right against her neck. He had the most plaintive eyes that seemed to express gratitude for the comfort he received in our home. He would follow me around and pull on my pants legs when he was so small that I had to be careful not to sling him around. This was something he did all his life. When I walked to the mailbox Frodo would always follow me playfully pulling at my pants leg. When we approached the house after going for a walk up the logging road  he would always start pulling on my pants leg as if he did not want us to go back yet. He never had an “accident” in the house or chewed anything. Once, while he was still so little, he had to go outside when it was raining. He hated getting wet so my wife followed him with an umbrella. He had my heart from the first day with those sad puppy eyes. He became more than just a pet, he became part of our family.

Well, we lost our dear Frodo Jan. 29th. Many of you can understand the sorrow we are feeling over his loss. I know because when I walk my Chihuahua (our other dog) at Ingles I have had many people talk to me about the pets they have loved and lost. People have shown me the pictures that they still carry. Now the question is, are we ever going to see them again? Do dogs go to heaven?

As a child I asked this question and was told by relatives and ministers that dogs did not go to heaven, they just ceased to exist. I accepted this although I always felt that it just did not seem fair. I love Bible study and I go through the Bible from cover to cover several times a year. I love to read books by the “heavy weights” on theology. A few years ago G. H. Pember, one of my favorite authors and a profound Bible teacher, got my attention about the possibility of animals in heaven. He suggested that animals would share in the resurrection. ( “Animals” by G.H. Pember) Later I found out that such prominent men as C. S. Lewis, John Wesley, J.A Seiss, Stephen Charnock, Joseph Butler, John Fleming, among many others believed this too. In fact It was their views on this that lead to the creation of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals lead by William Wilberforce. With the passing of Frodo I looked into it again and found many more prominent Bible scholars who believe this such as Billy Graham, Martin Luther, Jack Van Impe, W.A. Criswell Etc.

We are all familiar with Isaiah 11: 6-7 “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.” Well, here are animals on the regenerated earth. Where did they come from? Romans 8: 18-23 tells us the animals (the creature) are waiting to be a part of the new creation with man. This is where they came from.

So yes, dogs go to heaven, and I believe that one day I will see my little Frodo running down a logging road in Paradise, tail wagging, pulling on my pants leg again.

One question this raises is: wouldn’t heaven be overpopulated? Will spiders, rats, worms etc. be a part in this?
I agree with C. S. Lewis in his view of this. He believed that only animals with a sense of self that has been created because of a close relationship with man will share with man in the resurrection. In other words, only domesticated animals. He believed that only animals who have a connection with their masters will share in the resurrection. It is through man’s connection with Christ that he will be raised. In the same way, it is an animal’s connection with man that it can share in the resurrection too. Animals die because of man, so, it is not a stretch to believe they can be raised because of him.Isn’t that exactly what these verses mean?

Romans 8:20&21 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly ( not by its own choice ), but by reason of him who hath subjected [the same] in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

“Man was appointed by God to have dominion over the beast, and everything a man does to an animal is either a lawful exercise, or a sacrilegious abuse, of an authority by Divine right. The tame animal is therefore, in the deepest sense, the only ‘natural’ animal—the only one we see occupying the place it was made to occupy…”

Lewis explains that immortality would have no meaning to a newt if the newt had no sense of self. However, a higher animal with some awareness of self might benefit from continued existence after death. There has to be something of an individual entity there in order to have something to continue. Lewis conjectures that as Man is understood by his relation to God, perhaps beasts can be understood by their relation to Man, and through Man, to God.

Lewis believes that animals receive a sense of self or personality from association with their human masters. We give our pets names and they answer to those names (hopefully), and perhaps recognize themselves by them. “If a good sheepdog seems ‘almost human’ that is because a good shepherd has made it so,” says Lewis. “And in this sense,” suggests Lewis, “it seems to me that certain animals may have an immortality, not in themselves, but in the immortality of their masters.”

      Do Dogs Go To Heaven?

I agree with what you have said Mike. My parents have a very special dog who is in his later years and I believe and know we will see him in heaven one day.

I believe a Scriptural case can be made that the answer to the question “Do Dogs Go To Heaven?” question is a conditional “yes”. One condition of course is you must get to heaven yourself. But assuming you yourself get into heaven by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior, another condition is, do you believe? Do you believe God can and would manifest your dog in heaven to be with you for eternity? In John 19:26, Jesus said with God, all things are possible. So manifesting your dog in heaven falls under the category of “all things”, so yes, it is possible. But do you believe God would do such a thing? Jesus said:

“And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.”
      —Matthew 21:22

Having your dog with you in heaven falls under the category of “whatsoever”. So ask your heavenly Father for it, believe it, and you will have it! Matthew 21:22 is a blank check. If you write out that check with the pen of faith, God must, and will, honor it. And He will honor it with joy and love. But make sure to write out the check! Jesus said this:

23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
      —John 16

You believers with beloved pets, do you want your dog to join you in heaven? So then, have you asked your heavenly Father that you want fill-in-your-pets-name-here to be with you in heaven? Ask Him so your joy may be full!

At the core of this question about dogs in heaven is your relationship with your heavenly Father. Jesus said you must become like a child to enter into the kingdom of heaven. Would a child believe God could bring their dog to heaven? Yes. Would a child hesitate to ask God to bring their beloved dog to heaven to be with them? No. Would an earthly father deny their child their beloved pet? God loves us more than we can fathom, so how much more would our heavenly Father fulfill such a request! If your relationship with your heavenly Father is what it should be, if you treat Him truly as your Abba, then the answer to the question about will you see your beloved dog in heaven is yes, yes, yes, a million times yes!

Great comment am123. I think God’s plan is much more amazing than any of us can even conceive of now. I think there will be a lot of pleasant surprises for believers in that day.

2 Corinthians 4: 17&18 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

I dont believe in heaven. But I know one thing, hypothetically my cat wouldn’t. He’s a proper bastard.

If there is a heaven then all dogs go to heaven, because there are no criteria for their qualification. On the other hand no people can qualify if you are using the criteria given by Jesus, because they contradict too much. He gave 8 criteria for humans.

1 and 2 involve selling everything you own and giving the proceeds to the poor.

      3. Follow Jesus like a disciple.

      4. Love everyone.

5 Hate your father, mother, brother sister, everyone and the entire world.

      6. Follow all the old Jewish laws better than the law keepers, including the over 100 laws on ritual animal sacrifices.

      7. Practice the pagan rebirth ceremony, ie baptism,

      8. Practice ritualistic cannibalism, the Eucharist, also a pagan ceremony.

Heaven will be full of animals with zero humans.

No dogs do not go to heaven because there is none .When your heart stops beating your life energy will slowly be released into the atmosphere as heat and your body will be cold and done.

You have no idea how much this has helped me!!! Same with the comment below mine, by “am123″ I just prayed to God tonight and I know like I know like I know deep in my heart, that yes, ALL animals go to heaven! Your beloved pet will be there for you and with you for all eternity! Christ loves us all!

Thank you for writing this article. Yesterday I lost my baby girl at age 14. I am a Christain. My heart is so broken. I knew there were different views on it. I have always believed that God had special things for us. But this has helped me so much today. And am123, I never would have thought to ask had I not read your response. I can’t see wanting our beloved fur family with us in eternity being against Gods will. I never have placed her before God, therefore not making her superior to God, but rather thanked for giving her to me to love and for her to love me as she did. I almost lost 3 months ago but felt all along that God gave me just a little more time. And to Him, I gave the glory. I believe it was he that led me here. God bless you all.

I think dogs DO go to Heaven. I believe if we want our dogs in Heaven they will be with us. And as I remember, the dogs jumped over the Great Divide from Heaven to earth, and are meant to be with man. That’s why they are called Mans’ Best Friend.
