McDonalds removes halal chicken McNuggets and McChicken sandwich after settling lawsuit over claims that they didn’t always follow the religious procedures

McDonalds has removed halal items from its menu just two months after reaching a six-figure settlement in a lawsuit alleging that not all of the chicken was prepared according to Islamic law.

For more than a decade, two McDonalds franchises in Dearborn, Michigan served halal chicken McNuggets and a halal McChicken sandwich in order to please the large Muslim population in the area.

‘Those items have been discontinued as a result of our continued efforts to focus on our national core menu,’ a McDonalds spokesman said on Friday.

Problems: A class action lawsuit was filed against the company after people learned that the meat in the halal meals did not always comply with the religious standards as advertised

The menu items were initially added at the Ford Road and Greenfield locations in September 2000.

They took off instantly and that same year they accounted for 65 per cent of all McNugget sales at the Greenfield franchise.

Problems emerged, however, when a class-action lawsuit was filed against the fast food giant, alleging that they were sometimes selling non-halal chicken and claiming that it did actually meet the religious quality standards.

Under Islamic law, halal practice dictates that certain procedures need to be taken when preparing meat for human consumption which includes reciting a prayer while the animal is being killed.

The class action suit came to an end in April when McDonalds agreed to pay $700,000 in legal fees and charitable donations to Islamic charity groups following the case.

That said, The Detroit Free Press reported that McDonalds did not admit to any wrongdoing, saying that they found it important to ‘provide support to organizations that… serve and benefit the local community.’

In spite of the lawsuit, the lawyer who filed the claim found the decision to pull the items off the menu completely ‘disappointing’.

Kassem Dakhlallah told the paper that their lawsuit was intended not to have the items removed but ‘to ensure that all products sold were halal as advertised’.

He conceded that if they were unable to do that, however, ‘“then ceasing to offer halal products was probably the best decision.’
