The Watchman, David Wilkerson, and Survival Reminders

David Wilkerson Survival Reminders will bring you two pertinent video’s today. One short one of just under ten minutes and the other one about an half an hour long.  When David Wilkerson was killed some years back I did a memorial to him. David and I go way back, although having met him and worked in one of his crusades, he would not of known me. No matter! I was with many, many others who looked for and read his hard hitting monthly newsletters. You could always depend on David to give the truth. Yes, he did have enemies, and over the years we probably heard it all. But in measuring David by the bible and what he said, his heart came out and you knew he was a heartfelt, anointed preacher who loved the Lord.

The year was 1958 and David Wilkerson, after a vision; went to Manhattan, NYC and walked the streets. While there, one day he came upon Nicky Cruz. You probably know the story. Nicky’s parents were enslaved to Satan and Satanic ceremonies. The streets of NYC were cold, bloody, and full of people who took advantage of you. Yet in the hopeless situation one of America’s greatest Preachers and Watchman, David Wilkerson; met one of America’s future Evangelist’s. Nicky tells of this encounter and the moment in one of David’s crusades when he came to the Lord.

“I heard his voice: ‘God has the power to change your life.’ I started cursing loud,” says Nicky. “I spit in his face, and I hit him. I told him, ‘I don’t believe in what you say and you get out of here.’”

Nicky never expected what he heard Wilkerson say next.

Wilkerson replied, “You could cut me up into a 1000 pieces and lay them in the street. Every piece will still love you.”

Nicky says, “It did damage. Good [damage] in my brain and in my heart. I began to question, and for two weeks I could not sleep thinking about love.”

Nicky and his gang showed up at one of Wilkerson’s rallies. One by one, they gave their lives to Christ. It was the crucifixion – Jesus’ death on the cross — that grabbed Nicky².

The truth set Nicky free, just like it had set me and my wife free. Just like it has set untold numbers of sinners free since the day Christ died on the cross for sins of men.  David’s second vision, however; came to him in sometime in the Spring of 1973 and it was after much soul searching and seeking the Lord that David finally preached the word given to him, it was April 1973. His book the “Vision” was one of the first major books to warn of such a calamity coming to America, in recent memory. He gave detailed information at the time. Many did not like hearing it and it did make people turn against him. But he continued to warn, after all; David was a Watchman and called himself one. This was decades before the plethora of Watchman today on the internet today. Today being a Watchman puts you among a company that are virtually numberless. The shows heralding these Watchmen are also among a great number. But in David’s day, he was the lone Watchman. He was the one who stood and told America of the judgment coming. He told the church of the persecution that would come against them.

It was in June of 1973 that my wife and I got married. It would be a few years later on that we would give our lives to the Lord. It occurred during a family crises for me and a convention for my wife. In both places we came to a point where the Lord could get ahold of our hearts. Later on in that decade of the 70’s we would come to know of David Wilkerson, read his book, listen to his sermons, and read his newsletter. That began a relationship of ministry to us flowing from David Wilkerson.

In 1987, David Wilkerson returned to “the crossroads of the world” to establish Times Square Church. Since then, he has faithfully led this congregation, delivering powerful biblical messages that encourage righteous living and complete reliance on God³.  At the time, I remember him going back to NYC! It was the place where it all began so many years ago in 1958.

In 1969 I was stationed on the east coast as a Navy signalman seaman. The home port was Newport Rhode Island and it was from there on a weekend leave that I took a bus to the famed NYC. I stayed briefly at a hotel close to times square. But it was on the streets of Time Square that I walked. After I was done taking pictures, looking around, and absorbing the massive quantity of people and buildings; I went back to the ship. When David came back to NYC in 1987, his Times Square Church was on the very block where I had walked those many years previously.

Today as I view America and think on all these things David said so many years ago, I see the words coming to life.  My wife and I started our journey to work for the Lord as ministers many, many years ago. We were fairly new Christians, had a great Pastor, and a wonderful church. We left them, a good job, sold our house, and took the family to bible college. I knew that America as I have known would cease to exist, but did not know the details. I knew some things, but not all. I knew this before I was married, and before I knew of David Wilkerson.  My journey has been a long, tough, harrowing one. But in all things, we have seen the Lord pull us and our family through it all.  But as I remember David and his vision; I also remember the America and the faith my wife and I had in the beginning.  We were on fire, and today; we still have a lamp burning brightly in our souls, thanks to our Lord God and Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. We continue to warn, being faithful. We continue to prepare the remnant for the persecution to come, being faithful. We are not successful because we have a huge ministry or even a small one. We are not successful because we have lots of stuff, a new car, and a big house. We are not successful because we travel all over the world preaching. We are successful because we are faithful, even in the little things. Of all the things I have been reminded of these years are the words spoken to me by the Holy Ghost, “It is required in Men, that they be faithful”.  Today as I write the word faithful, I see David Wilkerson and his ministry. But I also see the Apostles and the early church; who amidst persecution and the filthiness of the Roman Empire, literally covered the known world with the gospel. So, to you, my friend, Let us be “Faithful”, as with our brethren before us; lead us on dear Lord, lead us on!

It is our turn today, to be faithful, to rise above, and to see to it; that we do our part in the end of days. Let us remind ourselves; therefore; of all these things.

It is as Peter said in Second Peter, of the things he wrote to the believers in that Epistle, he wrote and spoke of remembrance. In fact in the verses below, which I have inserted in this post with context; the word remembrance is mentioned four times. The people were to put these things Peter wrote into their conscience, heart, mind, and soul. They were not to forget them, they were to file them away in their memories so they could recall them quickly. These were the things, which Peter wrote. Things of eternal importance which would help the believers get through what was coming.

12  Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.
13  Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;
14  Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.
15  Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.

2Pe 3:1-4 KJV
1  This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
2  That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
3  Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
4  And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

We also need to put all these things in remembrance, both of what Peter wrote and of all the Apostles. But also of what David Wilkerson warned about.
