Something out there beyond the furthest reaches of the known solar system is tugging at Uranus and Neptune. A gravitational force keeps perturbing the two giant planets, causing irregularities in their orbits. The force suggests a presence far away and unseen, a large object, the long-sought Planet X. Astronomers are so certain of this planet’s existence that they have already named it “Planet X – the 10th Planet.”
The anomalous body was first spotted in 1983 by IRAS (Infrared Astronomical Satellite), according to news stories. The Washington Post reported: “A heavenly body possibly as large as the giant planet Jupiter and possibly so close to Earth that it would be part of this solar system has been found in the direction of the constellation Orion by an orbiting telescope aboard the U.S. infrared astronomical satellite. So mysterious is the object that astronomers do not know if it is a planet, a giant comet, a nearby ‘protostar’ that never got hot enough to become a star, a distant galaxy so young that it is still in the process of forming its first stars or a galaxy so shrouded in dust that none of the light cast by its stars ever gets through.”
Nibiru supporters contend that IRAS has, in fact, spotted the wandering planet.

“A Mystery Revolves Around the Sun,” an article posted by MSNBC on October 7, 1999 said: “Two teams of researchers have proposed the existence of an unseen planet or a failed star circling the sun at a distance of more than 2 trillion miles, far beyond the orbits of the nine known planets… Planetary scientist at Britain’s Open University, speculates that the object could be a planet larger than Jupiter.” And in December, 2000, SpaceDaily reported on “Another Candidate For ‘Planet X’ Spotted.”
Another article and photo appeared in Discovery News: “Large Object Discovered Orbiting Sun.” The article, published in July, 2001, says, “The discovery of a large reddish chunk of something orbiting in Pluto’s neighborhood has re-ignited the idea that there may be more than nine planets in the solar system.” Naming it 2001 KX76. the discoverers estimate that it is smaller than our Moon and might have an elongated orbit, but they gave no indication that it was heading this way.
Mark Hazelwood, who has a large website warning about the impending arrival of Nibiru and how we should prepare for it, suggests that all of these news stories lend credence to the existence of the Anunnaki’s Nibiru (although none of the articles said the celestial body was heading toward Earth).
Andy Lloyd isn’t as pessimistic – or at least his calculations are different. Since he speculates that Nibiru was actually the Star of Bethlehem seen about 2,000 years ago, “the problem faced by humanity as Nibiru again enters the planetary zone will fall to our descendants 50 generations hence.”
There is even speculation that the Vatican is tracking the position of Niburu. This video quotes Father Malachi Martin being interviewed by Art Bell as saying that the Vatican hierarchy, through research at its astronomical observatory, is monitoring the approach of something that could be “of great import” in the coming years.

Proponents of the fictitious planet note that, in 1984, a scientific paper was published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters which discussed several infrared sources with “no counterparts” that turned up in a survey of the sky. Such surveys are common in astronomy, and usually involve follow-ups that individually detail the more interesting sources

Planet Nibiru, which is also commonly referred to as Planet X, is believed by many to be the 12th planet in our solar system.  This large planetary object is thought to follow a long, elliptical orbit, reaching our inner solar system roughly every 3,600 years. This has raised concerns that Nibiru will either collide or have a near miss with Earth when it returns to our solar system.

The name “Nibiru” is derived from the writings of ancient astronaut theorist and author Zecharia Sitchin and his interpretations of Babylonian and Sumerian iconography, symbology and mythology. The most commonly referenced source is his book The 12th Planet released in 1976.

According to Sitchin, Nibiru collided with “Tiamat”, believed to have been another planet once located between Mars and Jupiter. This collision supposedly formed the planet Earth, the asteroid belt, and many comets.
Based on his interpretations of Sumerian mythology, Sitchin wrote that Nibiru was the home of a technologically advanced human-like extraterrestrial race called the Anunnaki. He also claimed that these same beings were called The Nephilim (race of giants) in the Book of Genesis, which evolved after the Anunnaki first arrived on Earth after Nibiru passed near by our solar system up to 450,000 years ago.

Some theorize it has a star-like moon, which serves as it’s heat source, making life possible on the long orbit away from a Sun-like star.  Others believe that life on Nibiru is possible  by other atmospheric conditions on the planet without the need of an external heat source such as our sun. 

Nancy Lieder is believed to have first put forth the belief of a Nibiru Cataclysm event back in 1995. Lieder initially referred to the planet as Planet X, but it is more commonly thought to be referencing Nibiru. This cataclysmic event has been explained as either a collision or a near-miss in which the intense gravitational pull of Planet X or Nibiru would create mass destruction on Earth including a pole shift which would destroy most of humanity. 

In the Star Trek movie, “Star Trek Into Darkness” released on May 16, 2013, Nibiru makes a cameo appearance and includes the main characters running through a red pigmented forest. 

Science fiction is often sourced as a medium to either acclimate the masses to new future technologies or to discredit unexplained events or events that are believed may create mass hysteria on our planet such UFOs or, in this case, to possibly diffuse the fear and uncertainty about Nibiru by associating it so directly with Science Fiction.

A clue to understanding Nibiru’s extreme elliptical orbit may very well be within our solar system in evaluating Pluto’s orbit.

The orbit of Pluto is unusual in several ways. Pluto has a more elliptical orbit than the other inner planets and most important to note is that it is on a different plane than the rest of our planets. In fact, it is inclined more than 17° from the plane of the orbits of the other planets.

Additionally, the orbit is also more eccentric (far from circular) than any other planetary orbits. At times, Pluto is actually closer to the Sun than the orbit of Neptune

It’s also worth noting the highly elliptical orbit of Halley’s comet which seems similar to Nibiru’s proposed orbit. It comes in close to our Sun and then shoots out disproportionately back out into space until it makes its way back towards the sun again. 

Halley’s orbit is retrograde; meaning it orbits the Sun in the opposite direction to the planets, and is also not on same orbital plane as our inner planets (18° to the ecliptic).

 Also interesting to note is that although Halley is classified as a “short-period comet” which means it’s a comet with an orbit less than 200 years, there are other comets classified as “long-period” which have highly eccentric orbits and periods ranging from 200 years to thousands or even millions of years.
