Seasons, Seedtime, and then there is Harvest: Scriptural

Seasons, Seedtime, and then there is Harvest; which brings me to the topic today. I suppose there is no greater feeling than to be able to have a Harvest. It is equated with bounty, plenty, and blessing. I find comfort that in all the world of chaos and wars going on; I can find a small place to enjoy. Yet the Lord God said2 that while the earth remained, there would be “seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter”. He added2 that “day and night shall not cease”. These things create in me hope, knowing that in the entire world the Lord is in charge. At night, living in the nearness of the Rockies, Big Horns, and other mountain ranges; the land is alive. I can from a mountain top stand in the midst of a grassy meadow and look up at more stars than you can imagine. Yet in the city where I live; that is a small city, at the night you lose probably 1/3 or more of the stars because of the city lights. But in all of this, I still find Harvest is a place in the scheme of things where man has fulfilled his part. God said “by the sweat of your brow”. Yes by my sweat on my brow; working the soil, dropping in seed, nurturing it, protecting it from enemies, and then be able to go and harvest some of the fruit or vegetables that have grown to maturity; yes, that is me fulfilling scripture.

Seasons, Seedtime, and then there is Harvest: Heritage

Yet there is something in it that which makes you go back year after year. Now my grandparents had gardens, fields, animals, etc. They were pioneer homesteaders in this state. In the beginning it was hard and they saw very difficult times. Working in the fields or gardens was hard work and many times nothing much to show for it. They went through WW I, the Great depression, WW 2, and finally by the time I was born and old enough to help out they had a pretty good farm going. But it did not happen overnight.

Seasons, Seedtime, and then there is Harvest: The Patch

Now I only have a small 9*10 patch of ground worked into a garden. Then I have another patch that is perennial vegetables and herbs, like Rhubarb, Asparagus, Raspberries, fresh sage, thyme, dill; among other items. This patch is 3 foot by 10 foot or so.  To add to this I have a raised bed, large round container beds, plus many other containers and pots. I have had to adapt, to learn what would grow and what would not. This year has been a banner year for our garden.  We have been eating from it for some time and have been able to share the bounty with family and neighbor alike.  But in all this, I get satisfaction along with relaxation when I finally rest up from the hard work. Make no mistake between preparing the ground, watering, nurturing, caring for all the plants, looking out for bug infestations, and other troubles; it is a full time job.

I have proven to myself and others that it is possible to garden in small spaces with small containers. I have seen the day at the beginning when there were many miserable failures. I had to learn from scratch, mainly because I did not learn from my grandparents the things I needed to know. Grandpa died when I was a young teen.  My parents did not farm or garden, so in my years after the kids have grown; I learned.

Seasons, Seedtime, and then there is Harvest: Satisfaction

But in these things, my satisfaction is growing, but then having it to eat; now that is a treat. By your own hands you grow food to eat. I don’t use chemical pesticides on the plants. In the truest sense of the word, I make my mulch; buy good ingredients for supplements like bone meal and blood meal among other items. But no harsh pesticides or chemicals are used. I can walk around my garden and grab an herb or a vegetable and eat it without any worry.  The ground needs work still and I have done a job to be able to grow anything. When I first started the neighbors told me “you can’t grow anything here, the soil is bad”! Well they were right! It was bad; but I worked to change that. I have succeeded in a small way here and the reward for me is on the summer nights grabbing a tasty fresh morsel out of my garden. Rub it on my shirt to clean it a bit and then eating it fresh as I enjoy the freedom, the quiet, and the evening. Yes, it is the Harvest here for my garden; not in its totality, that is coming. But for now both my wife and I enjoy the fresh vegetables, fresh herb salad dressing, and the many other rewards of working the ground. Indeed, there is Season, Seedtime, and then there is the Harvest. I always look forward to seedtime, but in the fall of the year when the squash has come on, and the winter squash is yet to be full, I work to pull the garden for the year. It is a sad time, but one of satisfaction. I plant a seed, grow a vegetable, save some seeds for next year, and eat the fruit thereof. Yes, that is satisfaction for me and I thank the Almighty Lord God who has allowed me to do this yet another year.

Shalom until next time;

Gen 8:20-22 KJV

20  And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

21  And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

22  While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
