At least they were not drones and we know who they belonged to.
Tragically, we have a grossly underutilized defense against Russian nukes that could seriously mitigate their lethality here, that few know about, much less appreciate.
We could instantly render all Russian nukes threatening us (Chinese, N Korean, Iranian and any terrorist nukes, too.) 90% less lethal, quick as the public is trained up again in the basics of Civil Defense ‘blast & fallout’ survival tactics. Here is the reality (reported at bbc, cnn, etc):
The planes did not enter US sovereign air space, which requires permission).
The planes entered the 200 mile out US Air Defense Identification Zone (which does not require permission but does have the right to demand identification.”
The planes identified themselves and never were closer than 55 miles from US Sovereign Zone.
They did nothing illegal; they provided id, and they complied with existing law.
The “interception” was the demand for id, and the planes provided and did not attempt to enter the Soverign Zone.
So this is just symbolismm, (showing those making threats what they are up against is quite rational), and the
alarming news that US (and Canadian) jets “intercepted Russian nuke-armed planes” actually comes down to the fact that nothing illegal or threatening was done (except to project potential force, just as the US is doing in Europe) and co-operation prevailed. The Russians made their point (we are NOT just a gas station, but a gas station with enough nukes to destroy you even if you shot down 90% of them), and the legal procedures were followed.
This article is another example of the dangers of fear-mongering and deceptive headlines.
Showing your ability to defend yourself is not illegal or irrational. It’s what we all do when people are making threats and lining your borders with nukes.
