(Of course, I would never have been able to write the following note at all had I not received the Vision of the “Son of man” in December, 1974, and the revelation of the memories of previous lives in December, 1975; and had I not met Danielle in September, 1982, and Elizabeth in March, 1987. So, I have to wonder, as Nietzsche once did in his Preface to Revaluation of All Values, whether the person has yet been born for whom this note has been written; in other words, is the person yet alive who can understand its implications?)
“Hagar gave a name to Yahweh Who had spoken to her: ‘You are El Roi [God of Vision]’, for, she said, ‘Surely, this is the place where I, in my turn, have seen the One Who sees me?’” [the question mark is not a typographical error]

Certainly, this is one of the most—if not the most—profound utterances of a woman anywhere in the Torah; with regards to which, however (and for some reason), very few rabbis appear to have any serious interest at all.
And it consists of two certain and definitive statements, followed by a question…
Statements made and a question asked not by any of the descendants of Abraham through Isaac and Jacob; but, rather, by Hagar, Abram’s wife and the matriarch of the Arabs; a question no less profound than—and, it could reasonably be argued, in response to—the question asked by Pilate in Chapter 18, verse 38 of the Gospel of John: “What is Truth?” (since the Vision received by Hagar is what is referred to in the Thanksgiving Hymns of the Dead Sea Scrolls as the “Vision of Knowledge”.)
But what is the meaning and significance of such a profound utterance? And, crucially, how did it come to be included in the Torah in the first place?
Now, to begin with, Hagar was certain of a number of things: 1) that Yahweh had conveyed Knowledge to her in words; 2) that He was the God Who had Revealed the Vision to her; 3) that she was ‘merely’ the most recent in a (long?) line of people who had received that Vision; and, 4) that there could be no doubt about what she had experienced .
What she was not certain of, however (as, of course, is indicated by the question mark), was precisely what that Vision signified.
In other words, her immediate reaction to the receiving of the Vision and the Knowledge that had been Revealed to her is what is recorded in the Torah—and this, of course, would have been prior to any discussions that she would have had with Abram in this regard—and was something along the lines of “What did I really experience just now?” Or, as written, Did I reallysee ‘the One Who sees me’?
And, obviously, the first question raised by Hagar’s initial statements is “How could she have been so certain (“Surely…”) that others before her (“I, in my turn…”) had received the same Vision that she had received?
And the answer to that question is is as simple as it is momentous:
Only Abram could have given her such information; and only because he had received a similar Vision himself; as can be established on the basis of Chapter 15, verses 12 &17 of Genesis, which pertains to the establishing of the Covenant between Abram and the Creator. (See:
Thus, Hagar received the Vision shortly after Abram; some years before Jacob [as described in Chapter 28, verses 10-19 of Genesis and Chapter 32, verse 31 of Genesis (which echoes the last part of Chapter 16, verse 13 of Genesis; but without the question mark; thus further suggesting that Knowledge of this Vision had, by that time, become an oral Teaching)]; hundreds of years before Moses (referred to in Chapter 3, verse 24 of Genesis as the “Tree of Life”); and thousands of years before Mohammed (referred to as the “Night Journey”, the “sidrah tree” and the “Night of Qadr”).
And, thus, this passage—which is no less significant than the establishing of the Covenant between Abram and the Creator—was included in the Torah as the result a conversation between Abram and Hagar about Hagar’s son, Ishmael, and the Vision and Knowledge that had been Revealed to her.
