Pretty much, yes. It’s in a different style but the same basic principles and elements are used. The difference is the Norse myths are totemic allegories that describe the nature of something. Eg the Jörmungandr is described as a sea serpent tossed into the great ocean that encircles Midgard. The serpent grew so large that he was able to surround the earth and grasp his own tail. As a result, he received the name of the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent. When he lets go, the world will end.

This is describing the undersea tectonic plate activity where it is opening, pushing the continents apart, ie the mid Atlantic rift. You can see it circle Earth. It rears it’s head briefly before plunging back into the ocean to grasp it’s tail, creating the fiery island called Iceland.

Uh, oh. Don’t tell the Christians that……. They’ll try to take credit for it.

All religions (to my knowledge) have some type of end-times story. Would you really expect them to differ in any substantial way?

        • Mayhem

Given that this version dates no earlier than the 10th century would you be surprised that it’s substantially similar to the Biblical narrative, Bill Lyle? Consider then: the Vikings hadn’t made a significant contribution to world history before their late 8th century invasion of England whereupon they came into contact, first, with the monks on the Island of Lindisfarne. I don’t know about you but i’m not in the least surprised that the Vikings copied this, in detail, and it turned up in the Norse prophecy around 200 years later and 700 years after the earliest, known, Scriptural “doomsday” prophecy.

You are referring to what the historians call the ‘Viking Age’ basically when they expanded out of their home lands and typically recounted from Britains perspective. Dated from when the Viking tales were translated from Rune to Latin, the Rune written language is prehistoric.

Their raiding in Europe was in retaliation to Charlemagne’s campaign and act of war to Christianise all pagans, hence the attack and looting of Lindisfarne. Their history goes back much further than that, thousands of years. Their ancient myths are based around their pantheon of gods not the Bible.

You claim they made no contribution but the Vikings invented deep ocean navigation and ocean crossing ships, the design is still in use world wide, also boat siege engines, they discovered the Americas long before Columbus, they travelled all over to Africa even Jerusalem, and they had a huge influence in Scandinavia, France, England, Scotland and Russia. In fact Pictland/Scotland the only country that managed to beat off the Roman empire was beaten by the Vikings.

The Norse age or the Viking age hardly matters, Pix, given the earliest known references to Ragnorak only date to the Viking age. Sure wōđanaz, the Norse god Odin, can be traced back to the late 5th or early 6th Century (CE) but the doomsday prophecy does not turn up on the scene until after the sacking of Lindisfarne Island, by the Viking horde, in the late 8th Century (CE).

The runestones depicting the “Norse” Ragnorak all date to the 10th or 11th Century (CE) which gave the Vikings around 200 years to assimilate Christianity. You know this, Professor Pix, so that’s why i guess you imagine us too lazy or too stupid to fact check your nonsense.

          Mayhem.

Again you are referring to the Anglo Saxon version of events. The oldest surviving rune set on stone is 1st century CE. Anglo Saxon rune sets begin in the 6th century CE.

        • Mayhem

Are you able to provide a link for these earlier Runestones and keep in mind the link to Ragnorak will need to be self evident?

    • Mayhem

Of course it’s describing the same events because it was copied straight from Scripture. Plagiarism is funny like that.

      • Pix

The Bible is 6th century CE. der. It’s only 1’400 years old. They didn’t copy from the Bible, their myths are translated from prehistoric runes to Latin, which doesn’t mean that is when they first existed.
