Satan (and his/her many other disguises) is regularly invented by religions as a counterweight to their own particularly Good Guy. A Jesus without a Satan would be like a Batman movie without The Joker. The audience can’t see what’s so good about a Good Guy who hasn’t got a Bad Guy to humiliate and thrash and generally titillate their latent sadistic tendencies. Satan is an absolute necessity for these sort to make any sense whatsoever out of spirituality. The New Testament (although it has several depths) was written for hylics such as these.
The great myth of Satan and Fallen Angels, etc etc, as spouted by christians today is mostly a re-issue of that marvellous horror video from 1667, Milton’s “Paradise Lost”. Semi-intelligent christians may like to read both Dante’s “Inferno” and “Paradise Lost” and try to figure out whether Satan is a personality derived from a being with no personality who lives in ice, or is a malevolent but powerless intelligence who lives in fire.
Intelligent Christians will forget all the crap about Satan, and focus on what the Christ has to say about the immortality of the soul – ie the continuance of mind and sentience separate from the physical body, and the futility of physical dependence, be it alcohol, sex, money, or swords. There are many other schools of thought that can help them with this, once they’ve got over their Satan worship.
The ‘continuance of mind’ cannot happen without blood flow and the electrical impulses in your brain. If a ‘soul’ was truly immortal then it existed somewhere else before you were born. But it does not, what people mistake for a ‘soul’ is nothing more than the body electric. Whenever the electricity is shut off from the machine it is dead- just like any other machine without electricity or battery backup and like Stephen Hawking said there is no heaven or hell for dead computers, it is just a fairy take for those that are afraid of the dark.
