The correct equation is 8″ or .67 feet X distance in miles squared. So for 12 miles it would be .67X12X12=96 feet

Try bringing a telescope next time. When the ship appears to be falling below the horizon with you binoculars, you will still be able to see the entire ship with a higher zoom, such as a telescope.

The curvature (if there were any) would not be visible from a passenger plane, what you are seeing is either the curvature of the glass window or nothing at all.

If the earth were a globe then from an airplane you would have to be looking very much downward in order to see the horizon but instead it is almost straight out the window and you don’t have to look down much at all to see it.
