A gallery of legends and fantastic stories evolved around the image of King Solomon over thousands of years, since antiquity. One of these stories, found in medieval Jewish, Christian and Islamic traditions, is the legend of the Seal of Solomon, a magical signet ring said to have been possessed by King Solomon, and which gave him the power to command demons (or jinni) and to speak with animals. Thus the legend of King Solomon’s ability to control demons evolved around the existence of a special magical seal, which held a magical drawing with supernatural powers.

The legend of the Seal, which supposedly King Solomon received from heaven, is found in all three monotheistic religions. The design of the Seal, whether a hexagram or pentagram, reflects the cosmic order, the skies, the movement of the stars in their spheres, and the perpetual flow between heaven and earth, between the elements of air and fire. It symbolizes super-human wisdom and rule by divine grace.

In some versions of the story, King Solomon’s ring was made of brass and iron, carved with the name of God, and set with four jewels. In later versions, the seal bore the symbol of the hexagram, consisting of two triangles interlaced rather than intersecting, often enclosed within a circle. This form of interlocking triangles, today referred to as the Star of David, was known to the Moslems as Khatam Suleiman and to the Jews as Khatam Shlomo (literally King Solomon’s Seal). Research shows that the protective nature of the hexagram and its ability to ward off evil demons, entered Jewish traditions from Islam.

Beyond the Jewish national association to Solomon’s Seal, which became attached to the hexagram in the last few centuries, the abstract element of the figure, also connected to the celestial stars and its geometrical completeness have made it a universal protective symbol. The hexagram and its earlier form, the pentagram, both became religious and magical symbols not specifically identified with one religion or people. Research suggests that both motifs were used by different religions and that the clearest meaning of the hexagram is associated with magical techniques to ward off evil forces.

Between the 13th and 15th centuries, Spanish Jewry, the largest Jewish community at the time, referred to the hexagram both as Solomon’s Seal and as the Star of David. It was only later, that a certain distinction was made, and whereas King Solomon’s Seal became itentified with the pentagram, the Star of David became the dominant name of the hexagram.
