Named for the German airship that met its demise in a fiery explosion 80 years ago, the appearance of this technical pattern sometimes portends a stock-market crash.
More stocks are hitting 52-week lows than 52-week highs on the New York Stock Exchange—something the market hasn’t seen since July 2015, according to Jason Goepfert, president of Sundial Capital Research. That trend is continuing, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.40% and the S&P 500 SPX, -0.35% giving up Tuesday’s gains in early Wednesday trade.

The Hindenburg Omen was a proposed technical analysis pattern, named after the Hindenburg disaster of May 6, 1937. It was promoted by Jim Miekka, who gave up on the theory that it portended a stock market crash in 2010.
