Authorities Arrest Student After Lockdown at Loch Raven High School (Video)

A student has been apprehended after a weapon was found in his backpack in a classroom at Loch Raven High School Thursday afternoon, police said. The incident prompted a lockdown at the school.

A student told a school resource officer around noon that he saw a gun in a 14-year-old classmate’s book bag, police said.

“It turned out that the gun was a pellet gun, but it was realistic looking enough to make that other student believe that it was real,” Baltimore County police Officer Jennifer Peach said.

The officer chased the 14-year-old student, who got away, and the school was placed on a lockdown as a precaution, police said.

Students told 11 News the incident was frightening, especially considering the school shooting in Florida on Wednesday. Many students thought it was just a training exercise.

“At first, it was, like, ‘Oh, it’s a drill. It’s just practice.’ And then we found out it was real, so then people started being worried,” another student said.

“I mean, it was crazy. Everybody was crying and screaming. We tried to stay calm, but everybody just, you know, can’t stay calm in the situation,” a student said.

Authorities said they knew the identity of the 14-year-old student and later found him in a third-floor classroom. Video obtained by 11 News shows SWAT officers taking the student into custody. Charges are pending, police said.

There was a heavy police presence at the school, SkyTeam 11 Capt. Roy Taylor reported. Taylor said a police tactical team went into the school and officers surrounded the campus. Roads in the area of the school were blocked. Nearby Concordia Prep was also put on lockdown as a precaution.

No injuries were reported. The situation was resolved in about 45 minutes and the lockdown was lifted a short time later, police said.

Police said the student who reported the gun did the right thing.

“It’s exactly what we need them to do. We need the students to speak to the SROs and be comfortable telling them when they see something like this so we can determine if this is a real threat or not a real threat,” Peach said.
