Israel is going to have a showdown with Iran at some point. Timing is everything. Israel will make this happen while Trump is still in office, they are not likely to risk waiting for a possible Trump reelection loss. Furthermore, the US is on the brink of war with China and civil war. Israel may feel pressured to deal with Iran while the US is able to help and deter Iranian reprisal, before the US is too embroiled. There is also the possibility that Israel is being used as the backdoor to bring America into war with China by getting the US into distraction or feigned distraction dealing with Iran, thus enticing China to make a move. War in the Middle East can also serve to lock down oil making it difficult for China to find supply, raise prices to rescue US shale companies, and maybe appease Russia just enough to stand down as it makes a killing selling oil to China. I wouldn’t expect Russia to stand down if Iran is truly imperiled, but sitting back and watching the US and China take some blows is probably in Russia’s interest. Though I would never rule out Russia joining China and Iran in attacking America even if they signal staying on the sidelines.
