News: Sacramento leaders attempt to curtail actions outside City Hall

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) – Members of the Occupy movement are questioning a proposal that’s making its way through a Sacramento City Council committee.

The proposal would curtail and limit actions people can take outside City Hall.

Under the current proposal, which is set to be reviewed by the law and legislation committee, the use of amplified sound, drums, horns, or any other sound other than the ‘unmanipulated’ human voice would be restricted between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., or during noticed public meetings.

“We want to make sure it can function as a place of business,” said Sacramento General Services Director Reina Schwartz.

Members of the Occupy movement, which is currently based outside of the area, believe the proposal is targeting them.

“I think we have the right to assemble,” Occupy protester Todd Mantle said.

The city said it was working on the ordinance before the Occupy movement started.

The committee is set to listen to the proposal July 24.
