Infrastructure Update

On Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) brought the “bipartisan,” un-written infrastructure bill to the Senate floor on a cloture motion, which required 60 votes to open debate. It failed by a vote of 51-49. Every Republican voted against cloture. Senator Schumer changed his vote from yes to no, which allows him to call for another cloture vote when the bill is actually written. The Republican senators negotiating the bipartisan deal have indicated they will vote for cloture as soon as the bill is finalized. Some senators are saying the bill could be ready for another cloture vote as early as Monday. The eleven Republicans working toward a bipartisan plan are Richard Burr (NC), Bill Cassidy (LA), Susan Collins (ME), Lindsey Graham (SC), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Rob Portman (OH), Mitt Romney (UT), Mike Rounds (SD), Thom Tillis (NC), Todd Young (IN), and Jerry Moran (KS). House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said the House will not vote on the bipartisan deal until the Senate votes on the larger “human infrastructure” plan. The pricetag on the unwritten bill currently stands at $1.2 trillion. The official cost of the “human infrastructure” plan is $3.5 trillion, but it could actually end up costing as much as $5.5 trillion. Republicans who are working to pass the bipartisan bill are inadvertently helping Pelosi advance her radical spending bill.
