Should You Share Clothing and Jewellery?
It’s fun to share clothes and jewellery with friends and family, but there are definitely times when it’s a better idea to keep them to yourself. It really does come down to hygiene, how much you value an item, and if you could afford to lose it. Here’s a quick guideline to help you decide:
DON’T SHARE
Sentimental Items
Great grandmother’s wedding ring is not something you want to lend out, even to your best friend! Family heirlooms have an emotional value that can’t be insured or replaced, and great aunt’s ugly brooch may turn out to be a priceless piece of unique jewellery.
Piercings
This might be an obvious case of sensible selfishness, as sharing piercings carries a definite risk of infection or disease. You can do it safely, though it requires sterilising the piercings before and after using them, so unless you know exactly what you are doing, don’t share piercings jewellery.
Expensive Items
If what you are wearing costs more than a month’s income, don’t share it. So what if your sister is dining with Julia Gillard tomorrow? Thanks to technology, costume jewellery nowadays is of such a high quality, with much of it looking identical to the real thing. Your sister doesn’t need your $3000 necklace when she can wear the $20 replica instead.
With Certain People
Yes, it does matter who is asking. You wouldn’t want to share your 100% cashmere vest with a friend who is rough on clothes, and there’s a good chance she’ll spill her coffee on it. Perhaps lending them your old hoodie would be a better option.
Unmentionables
Undergarments have to be included in the category of ‘Do Not Share.’ Sharing clothes you wear intimately carries the risk of cross-contamination with another person’s bodily fluids, infections and diseases. You are far better off with no underwear than someone else’s.
YES, SHARE
To Save Money
If you are a student, single parent, or otherwise on a budget, sharing clothes and jewellery can noticeably reduce your expenditure while supplying you with interesting and unique additions to your wardrobe and jewellery box. Having a group of friends who are willing to share can mean you rarely have to buy any new jewellery at all, and you can put the money you save towards items no one in your crew has, or even ones you’d rather not share.
More Variety
Sharing closets with your family, friends and neighbours, means that your closet has essentially multiplied, without any spending on your part! You now can try on different styles, different colours and different looks for free, so you can have a trial run with that new look before you go out and invest any money on it.
So Nothing Goes To Waste
It’s always a shame to see a good thing go to waste. If you have clothing or jewellery that you aren’t wearing anymore, you may as well let someone else get some use out of it. Sharing is a sure fire way to ensure that the things you enjoyed will continued to be appreciated, though this time by someone else.
There are clear guidelines as to when you should and shouldn’t share your clothes and jewellery. I hope we’ve given you some useful advice that will ensure you won’t feel guilty the next time you say no to a work colleague asking to borrow your Tiffany necklace for their night out clubbing.
