Divorce or marriage rate in the states where homosexual marriage is allowed is on the lower side in comparison to the states where it is not allowed. Some of the states in America that recently legalized same sex marriage also saw a jump in marriage rate and downfall in the divorce rate. For example, the state of Massachusetts that allowed gay marriage in 2004 saw a rise of 16% in the marriage rate, where as the divorce rate of the state also went down a bit. The reason behind this is that homosexual couple had been waiting for a long time to get married and once legalized, they got married.

Five states in America namely, New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire, recently legalized same sex marriage between 2008 to 2011. According to the marriage statistics these states saw a jump in the marriage rate but came to back to normal in a year. However, the divorce rate in these states remained on the lower side. People often fear that gay marriages will destroy the institution of marriage, but looking at these number, it feels that same sex marriage are strengthening the belief in marriage rather than destroying it.

The state of Washington declared homosexual marriages legal in 2010 and witnessed an increase of 61% in marriage rate. The divorce rate of the state also went down.

People think that homosexuality is affecting the marriage or divorce rate but this is not true. Some of the states in America track the divorce rate in homosexual marriages and if you look at the statistics you will find that these marriages are more successful than traditional marriages.
