First Impressions Never Last
This week, I was having a conversation with a coworker of mine about first impressions. She told another person (higher in ranking than her) that she didn’t believe in first impressions and holds no value to them. I laughed and thought it was a pretty bold statement to make in a workplace setting. But later, I thought about it and realized she made a very valid point. When we think of the root word of “impression”, it’s nothing more than “impress”. Maybe it’s a new hairstyle, extra cologne, a plastered smile or an overly exaggerated style of diction. But it’s all used to impress or be something (or someone) that we’re not. At best, it’s an exaggerated version of our true selves. Of course, I would want to put my best foot forward and stand above the other candidates. But when we really get down to it, do we really know someone by our first impression? Sometimes yes (after time proves our assumptions to hold true), but often times we don’t.
