Assalaamu Alaikum (Greetings of Peace):

On April 12, 2012, in a federal courthouse in downtown Boston, a Muslim-American political prisoner (and prisoner of war) by the name of Dr. Tarek Mehanna delivered a speech that can be described as both elegant and defiant. J.W. Carney, Tarek’s lead defense attorney, stated at the press conference that followed the sentencing:

“When the history of Islam [in America] is written, I wonder what impact the speech by Tarek Mehanna will have on future generations.”

I couldn’t agree more. What happened in that Boston courthouse, from start to finish, was something truly, truly amazing. Despite years of unwarranted and brutal pre-trial imprisonment, Dr. Tarek Mehanna was not broken by the state; and when he finally had his opportunity to address the powers-that-be, he said what needed to be said!
