Verizon Commercial Promotes The Singularity Deception

Verizon’s commercial for the new Droid phone called “DNA”, embraces many of the concepts detailed in our article on the Singularity: the moment scientists believe humanity will be able to fully integrate with computers and achieve “immortality” through advanced technology. The idea of achieving eternal life outside of God, is an aspiration that is right in line with the deception offered by the Devil since the Garden of Eden.

Here is the commercial:

As detailed in our article “The Singularity: Science’s Quest For Immortality and Satan’s Deception”,  a number of scientists, academics and philosophers have joined forces in researching and developing “life extension technologies” that will eventually enable human beings to download their consciousness into a computer system, giving them “eternal life” via technology. The Russia Global Future 2045 Conference, held in 2012, brought thinkers and scientists from all over the world to discuss the latest ideas and innovations related to the Singularity all under the leadership of Ray Kurzweil, a renowned scientist and inventor, who has been the leader of the Singularity movement.

In describing the conference’s purposes their website stated:

The social movement Russia 2045 was conceived of as a means of promoting the idea of humanity attaining cybernetic immortality. As the founders of the movement, we believe that these technologies in particular will provide the impulse that is so necessary right now to accelerate technological progress. It is cybernetic immortality in particular that will be able to grant people real freedom, including freedom from influence by the environment and the opportunity to explore the far reaches of space. Moreover, it’s possible that this scenario will become a reality sooner than other such possibilities for extending life span all the way to immortality. (source).

The idea of achieving immortality or eternal life without receiving it from God the Creator of all things, started in the Garden of Eden. It was a part of Satan’s initial deceptive offer to Eve that led her into sin and rebellion against The Lord:

Now the serpent was more [subtle] than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. — Genesis 3:1-5.

The Bible is clear that no matter what humanity accomplishes, it will never reach “godhood.” All people are created beings and because of sin and rebellion against God, are subject to disease, decay and ultimately death. But there is a way to receive the gift of eternal life from God and that is through faith in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins.

As the end times draw closer, science is reaching new technological advances at breakneck speed. Scientists today truly believe that they can achieve immortality. Even Microsoft founder and billionaire Bill Gates in an offhand remark, stated that “not dying” was one of his final goals in life. Slick productions like the Verizon commercial serve to implant the idea in the minds of the general public of the potential for “evolution” into something even greater than the current human body. Is it possible that the Antichrist, the prophesied False Messiah, who will rule over a global government in the final years before Christ’s Second Coming, will offer “immortality” to those who follow him? Revelation 13 states that the Antichrist will return from the dead – a feat that causes the entire world to not only be amazed by him but worship him as a god. Could he also make the same deceptive offer Satan made in the beginning of humanity? (For more information on this see our article on the Singularity).

There is nothing wrong with scientific innovation. And nothing wrong with technology in and of itself. But humanity should never be deluded into thinking it has achieved the level of God or can ever replace God. Pray for the light of the Gospel to continue to shine and for Christians to use technology as a way to promote Jesus Christ and true eternal life, in the face of the rising tide of science’s goal of “living forever.”
