The Book of Job- The Ego (Satan) versus the True Self (God)

The ancients usually wrote figuratively when teaching, rather than literally, and I believe the Book of Job was no different. The story is about a materially wealthy man named Job, who loses all of his money and loses his children under tragic circumstances, all while losing his health in the process. While this was going on he was tempted by his ego, which the Bible calls Satan. When someone goes through this type of suffering it’s extremely difficult to not live through the ego, become fearful, angry, or to project this anger on to others.

It’s also during these times, when we get advice from the wrong people. Instead of being conscious of our thoughts and actions, we begin living our lives unconsciously. Being aware is half the battle, and if we are not aware of our thoughts and actions, we can literally create negative karma and a hell on earth.

If you take this story of Job literally, like so many do, then you will eventually be asking yourself some eerie questions: Why would God let Satan kill Job’s children just to prove a point? Why would God allow Satan to inflict this much suffering on one man? It really doesn’t make any sense.

If you read the story as a parable describing the tough task of living through your True Self, while keeping the ego under control during excruciating mental anguish, then this story makes perfect sense. Not to mention, it’s a great lesson everyone should learn.
