The Most Overlooked of the Ten Commandments by a Billion Christians, the 2nd Commandment
Summary: Catholic translations of the Bible are accurate and show the 2nd Commandment as You shall not make any graven images. Nevertheless, the catechism does not teach it. We take a closer look at the wisdom and reason behind this commandment.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them.
This 2nd commandment forbids worshiping God by images or representations. Those who do claim that their images are merely figures or symbols by which Deity is worshiped, but God has forbidden it.
Representing the Eternal One by objects that we make lowers our conception of God. The mind, turned from the infinite, is attracted to the creature rather than the Creator. Giving time or focus of worth (worth-ship) to objects of our own hands may be idolatry.
The conmandment also says, I, the Lord thy God, am a jealous God. The close, sacred relation of God to His people is represented as marriage. Idolatry is spiritual adultery, and God’s displeasure is jealousy.
Visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me. Children suffer from the consequences of parental wrong-doing, Usually children walk in the ways of their parents. By heredity and example children become like their parents. Their tendencies, perverted appetites, and morals, as well as physical disease and degeneracy, are transmitted to the children. This fearful truth should restrain us from following a life of sin.
Showing mercy unto thousands of them that love Me, and keep My commandments. Mercy is promised to those who are faithful in God’s service, not just to the third and fourth generation like the wrath on the ungodly, but to thousands who love and serve God.
Protestant Reformers were united in their view that the papacy was the little horn power that grew out of the 4th beast in Daniel 7 where the lion, bear, leopard and dragon represented Babylon, Medo-Persia, Grecia and Rome, but the little horn “thinks to change times and laws,” Daniel 7:25.
In eliminating the 2nd Commandment from the catechism, there was a dilemma of 9 commandments. The 10th was then divided to make ten–not coveting your neighbor’s wife, and coveting his goods.
This difference is probably behind the trouble of displaying the 10 Commandments in courtrooms or claasrooms. Which version shall we use? A difference in wording might also be a problem for the Jews with the 6th Commandment that we will discuss later in this series on the 10 Commandments.
The Greeks had a problem understanding who God is, and they had an image to the Unknown God. Paul told them, The times of this ignorance God winks at, but commands repentance in a time of judgment (when we may get better information.,Acts 17:30,31) This implies that we should go by the best information that we can find, especially when it comes to our worship and service to God.

So if God could create/image the most Holy thing of all on Earth..his presence….for us to see him and his ministry and focus our hearts to him why cannot we use other images to focus our hearts to heavenly things also. Which set of biblical 10 commandments are you talking about?
The Jewish religion which Christianity claims to be founded on, has hundreds of commandments including over 100 commandments on absolutely disgusting barbaric ritual animal sacrifices.
Which particular 10 are you talking about?
Perhaps you mean the 8 essential criteria that Jesus gave for entry into heaven, that not a single person in existence has ever practiced… thus proving not a single person claiming to be a Christian believes a single word of it. The 10 Commandments are found in Exodus 20 and were written by God on stone. The statutes and judgments were recorded by Moses and were guidelines to the ten which helped one to know duty in every circumstance of life. A quick overview of the judgments is found in Exodus 21-23. For example, if you stole a sheep and were caught, you would have to restore 4-fold–much better than going to jail and tax-payers supporting you, or the government fining you., or cutting off a boy’s hand for stealing bread in Muslim countries. (Exodus 22:1)
I asked because there are more than one set of 10 commandments in the bible. All of them different.
The biblical Exodus story is different from the original Jewish version. In the original they hold a competition between which of their deities is the most important. See commandment 1. ‘Have no other gods before him’, which does not exclude the worship of other gods. The various different beliefs they held, a mixture of traditional Egyptian beliefs and the newly invented mono deity religion invented and enforced on the entire population by the Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep IV, c1’300 BCE.
They built various temples at the site of Mount Sinai in Saudi Arabia, one of which is a temple to Hathor the horned cow goddess of fertility. In the biblical version it is a golden calf.
They held a competition between them, El won, the priests of El were such good sports, they ordered the followers of El to butcher the followers of the other deities, which resulted in them killing half their own number.
There is plenty of evidence in the deserts of their journey from Egypt to Palestine, they left a trail of debris and dead bodies behind themselves.

To some extent we are all hypocrits–critiical of others but not of ourselves. Christ was saying we should take the beam out of our own eye before we can see to take the speck out of our brother’s eye. The Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 is famous for focusing on the attitudes we should have–if so, our actions will also be right.

God said the stranger (Gentile) staying with Jews is also to observe the Sabbath. Not all of Moses’ commands are for Gentiles and Gentiles should not commit blasphemy by claiming to be Jews:

Hiding the Second Commandment?
Another charge sometimes made by Protestants is that the Catholic Church “hides” the second commandment. This is because in Catholic catechisms, the first commandment is often listed as “You shall have no other gods before me” (Ex. 20:3), and the second is listed as “You shall not take the name of the Lord in vain.” (Ex. 20:7). From this, it is argued that Catholics have deleted the prohibition of idolatry to justify their use of religious statues. But this is false. Catholics simply group the commandments differently from most Protestants.
In Exodus 20:2–17, which gives the Ten Commandments, there are actually fourteen imperative statements. To arrive at Ten Commandments, some statements have to be grouped together, and there is more than one way of doing this. Since, in the ancient world, polytheism and idolatry were always united—idolatry being the outward expression of polytheism—the historic Jewish numbering of the Ten Commandments has always grouped together the imperatives “You shall have no other gods before me” (Ex. 20:3) and “You shall not make for yourself a graven image” (Ex. 20:4). The historic Catholic numbering follows the Jewish numbering on this point, as does the historic Lutheran numbering. Martin Luther recognized that the imperatives against polytheism and idolatry are two parts of a single command.
