Following Orders versus Doing What’s Right

Some people have been enslaved for so long that they have come to equate “following orders” with “doing what’s right”.  They have confused these two things as being the same thing when in actual fact they are entirely distinct and separate things, and sometimes even at odds with one another.
 
A good slave will obediently follow orders and do what they’re told without question and without thinking; a good slave has no conscience.  They act as a robot would act.  This is actually a very low-order defense mechanism to try and avoid responsibility and assign cause elsewhere, though the person carrying out the order is in-fact being cause, because they are the one who is actually performing the action.
 
A free person with a conscience on the other hand will look ahead at the consequences of their actions before they carry them out, and decide on that basis whether to follow through with them or not.  A free person with a conscience will ignore orders when they are harmful or destructive, and depending on their level of courage and integrity, may even directly oppose and countermand those orders altogether.
 
 
Some people have been beaten down to the point where they feel they have no personal power, and they are only powerful when they are part of a group.  They have come to believe the lie told by the enslaver that the group is all and the individual nothing, and thus in order to be powerful, they must do as the group does.
 
But when the dictates of the group require that one violate one’s own sense of ethics and personal integrity, one destroys oneself in order to belong and be “powerful”, and thus actually looses one’s own personal power and becomes even more enslaved.
 
 
Some people have been enslaved for so long that they would never dream of questioning the actions of others around them, and would never dream of acting independently and accepting responsibility for their actions; but when a group of these are confronted by a lone individual with a strong sense of self and a strong sense of ethics, you can often see how truly weak and cowardly a group of slaves really are.
