The Urantia Book Spiritual Scam

It seems no matter how “advanced” we like to believe we are, there’s always this basic need for answers about life. No matter how technologically advanced or wealthy we get, we keep searching for a deep sense. People will put their faith into believing just about anything without some minimal verification. I understand the need to know where we come from and our purpose in life. It also appears to me that some great manipulators and deceivers have also discovered this and so try to take advantage of the vulnerable. There are now thousands of different sects and spiritual groups around the world that take root from the main religions. Each one of them offers their own interpretations of life from the beginning, their own worshiping system and mythologies. I don’t have time to discuss them all so I’m just going to focus on one in particular because a colleague at work had mentioned it to me recently. I decided to do a little research to see what it was all about because I am so damn fed up of all those postmodern pseudo-spirituality movements.

It’s called the Urantia Book. It is said that the author is anonymous but we are told that it was actually communicated by some “celestial beings”, yeah like aliens. The book is managed by a group of people (or a single guy) who call themselves the Urantia Foundation, “revealing the mysteries of God, the Universe, Jesus and ourselves”. That sounds very cool actually why would anyone not be interested to know who God is finally? It must be legit too I mean its written on the book cover who cares!? So here’s how the story goes according to the Urantia Foundation: in 1911 a guy named William S. Sadler, a psychiatrist, received this weired visitor that blurted stories while he was in some trance from which he could not wake up. This mysterious man was actually believed to be serving as a communication channel, through which the said celestial beings were speaking to us. William Sadler decided to write everything and so the Urantia Book was born. No body ever saw or witnessed this except for William who supposedly talked about it to a group of people named the “Contact Commission”. This cannot be proven because according to the Urantia Foundation, none of them is still alive and their names cannot be revealed in case people want to adore them… yeahhhh…

I’m starting to smell bullshit here, so let’s get digging shall we? Let’s start with what we know: William S. Sadler was a very busy man, member of many associations and foundations, such as the Kellogg Foundation and the Seventh-Day Adventists. Also married to Lena Kellogg… wait there are too many Kellogg associations here. I don’t like this coincidence a bit. Whenever I hear the name Kellogg, it automatically rings an alarm in my head. I previously wrote a blog entry a few weeks ago (here) about the racist foundations of eugenics. But before we go forward let’s learn a bit about the Kelloggs. You see, the name is more than a cereal brand. In 1876 John Harvey Kellogg was a controversial medical doctor who administered the Adventist hospital in Battle Creek Michigan. He was a prominent member of the Seventh Day Adventists who settled in great numbers in Battle Creek more than a century ago. The Adventists, sincere and dedicated fundamentalists, observed the Sabbath on Saturday and believed in the Second Coming. They also believed that the White people were sent from God to populate the Earth, that “Niggers”, “Indians” and other none-Whites were to serve them. Many Advantist leaders supported the doctrine of Arianism. By providing his patients with plans to readjust their diet and lifestyle J.H Kellogg put many new items on the market under catchy names, such as the Corn Flakes. His name became for ever associated with a brand of cereals, although he regretted to be remembered this way. He was also the founder of the Race Betterment Foundation, which became a major center of the new eugenics movement in America. Kellogg was in favor of racial segregation and believed that immigrants and non-whites would damage the gene pool of pure White people. It also happens that the founder of the Urantia Book, William Sadler, was also a member of this foundation.

According to Martin Gardner, author of “The Great Cult Mystery”, Wilfred Custer Kellogg was the “channeller” Sadler talked about. Wilfred Custer Kellogg was actually the descendant and hereditary of his uncle’s legacy, J.H. Kellogg. In fact there was no channeling whatsoever. Just basic pen and paper editing done with his brother-in-law William Sadler. Besides, the Urantia Foundation is a cult and nothing more. Not so much different from the Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Raelians, Scientologists, or even Mormons. Their beliefs are based on nothing else but blinding faith and empty hopes. The scientific facts stated for example are outdated and based on knowledge known only at the time the book was written. Highly irrelevant if it were communicated from a well advanced race of aliens. The described formation of the solar system is consistent with the Chamberlin-Moulton planetesimal hypothesis discarded in the 1940’s. Some species are said to have evolved suddenly from single mutations without transitional species, but the idea has not been supported since 1930. Controversial statements in the book support the idea of distinctive “spheres” in society based on physical differences such as color. According to Gardner, William S. Sadler and Wilfred Custer Kellogg who wrote some eugenicist works, had a hand in editing or writing the book, and that this is how the ideas were included. Another fact is that the book is said to have been published in 1955, giving more time for the editors to edit old scientific facts to satisfy the needs. Furthermore, in recent years the book had shown that it was edited again from its earlier versions, to include more accurate scientific facts, so they make it look like the whole thing was prophesied in 1911.

It’s easy to fall for any philosophy that preaches peace, love, acceptance and equality for all. Who in their right mind wouldn’t want such a thing for all of us? No cult is going to win you over by stating that they worship murder and rape, well maybe satanism. So obviously we all want the same answers about life, where we come from, where are we going. We need to feel special, accepted and loved. We want peace for everyone and reigning harmony for the planet. These are all simple core values preached from all major religions since the dawn of scriptures. The problem lies in the interpretations humans make of each and single word, instead of just retaining the essential message that can be resumed on one page. I don’t care to know about the birth of life and if there are extraterrestrials. Sure it’s nice to know these facts but aren’t essential for me. What’s essential is how I live my life in the NOW and how I make the best of it. Trying to live in peace with my surrounding and make a positive foot print in this world. These are the things that matter. Finding my own truth.

On a final note, I leave you with a Buddhist parable that illustrates well the futility of too much knowledge: It is said that one time a man was hit by a poisonous arrow and had a few days to live unless he got an antidote. But the man was more preoccupied in knowing who had shot the arrow, where was the man, what was his name, why did he do this. He also wondered what the poison was, what kind of arrow was it, the kind of wood and where was it made. In the end the man died because he had wasted his time wondering with useless questions instead of looking for the antidote.

So please explain how Stevie Ray Vaughan ties into this……

Read the book before you spread your position on it. People laughed when they said the world was round. Truth is everywhere, not just the bible or conspiracy theories.

    • Thoughts

Read the book as suggested. The information in this article clearly shows you do not know what your talking about. Its clear you did notread the book. How can you have a respected oppinion if you did not read The Urantia? Seriously, shows your poor skills in Journalism.

I have read it. More fairy tales for gullible people.

The author of this article clearly has not read the Urantia Book and his account of the history of the book is all wrong too. The author implies that William Saddler met some weirdo in 1911 who was blurting out stories from a trance, but what the author of this article does not tell you is that Doctor William Saddler, who is considered to be the father of modern psychiatry, spent a large part of his life during the early 1900s travelling the united states with Houdini and Thurmond (a slight of hand expert), exposing fraudulent “spiritualists” who were bilking money from the unsuspecting public. In fact, Doctor Saddler states that he had never believed in communication with the spirit world and that he had successfully debunked thousands of these charlatans, but in the appendix to his 1928 book, “The Mind at Mischief”, Saddler admits that there was only one case, which totally baffled him and he studied this man from 1911 to 1928, before finally admitting that this one case is the exception. And..This one exception is the “weirdo” that the author of this article is talking about. Clearly, Doctor Saddler was well respected in his field and he did not just willy-nilly accept the “ravings” of this “weirdo” as the real deal…No…He thoroughly studied this man for 17 years before arriving at this conclusion!!! In addition, Doctor Saddler was NOT the only person who spoke with this man and wrote everything down, as the author of this article claims…There were, in truth, over 50 other people involved…So, I just have 2 things to say to the author of this article: #1 At least, know all the facts and get them straight before you mislead the readers on this site into believing that you know what you’re talking about…And…#2 — Take some time to actually sit down and read the book in it’s entirety before judging it’s contents. I have no respect for a person who passes judgement on the Urantia Book (or any book, for that matter) by relying on the opinions of others without reading the entire book for themself.

    • Slowlyforward

I couldn’t agree more with these comments. This person has no idea what their talking about. It aggravates me when everyone starts talking about the Kelloges and Margret Sangers version of Eugenics when they are talking about the Urantia Book. Show utter ignorance is what it does.

The Urantia Book has absolutely nothing to do with Jehovah’s Witnesses religion.

I just now read the above comments regarding The Urantia Book. I have been a devoted student of this book for about 35 years. I surely do not view it as a “hoax.” However, each person is entitled to his/her opinion.
Now, some people are ready for The Urantia Book and some are not. Those who are not can come up with some far-out conclusions, most of them false.

During the next several years you are going to see events that you simply may not be able to believe. But your suffering will not be a hoax. Your astonishment will not be a hoax. I am speaking of the Years of Tribulation that are so vividly described in the Bible.

      Sincerely, LeeJai

Dear Anonymous: Thank you for your comments about persons who condemn a book before they read it.
Following is some news that has not been reported in the newspapers or anywhere else:
Jesus has elevated Elijah, the Old Testament prophet, to the position of World Ruler. I do not know when he will appear. Those who are somewhat familiar with the Bible may remember that Elijah disappeared “in a chariot of fire.” 2Kings 2:11. This means he fused with his Thought Adjuster while still in the flesh. It also means that he has chosen to eternally live and act according to the will of God. He was one of the finest of the Hebrew prophets, a prophet of brilliant spiritual achievement.
It will be necessary for him to initiate numerous programs that will cause bitterness around the world. No doubt he will be castigated as one of the Beasts described in the Bible. [See the Book of Revelation and the Book of Daniel, among others.]
The office of the President, the Senate, the House of Representatives, and the Supreme Court will be abolished.

      Sincerely, LeeJai Cook

Just after being introduced to UB in ’96, I read Gardner’s Urantia – the Mystery Cult.
I felt the book was a good journalistic presentation, from which I concluded Sadler was a desperate ‘Wanna be’. Other Urantia related info relating to Sadler could well fit Gardner’s expose, except the Sadler account.
With respect to eugenics in UB, 1 hit in the search engine. UB states mixing of colours strengthens the gene pool. There is nothing racist about it. Eugenics is important for simple minded humans to understand, so that everybody might make an informed decision with respect to procreation. Humanity is not well served when people with genetic flaws pass those flaws into their progeny, and in some cases, at great cost to the community.
People unable to look after themselves should not be having children, particularly if the offspring would also be ‘special care’ individuals. Logical enough for my mind.
Any reasonably intelligent person perusing the UB would immediately see the grammatical style is beyond any human endeavour. The Authors of the Papers are listed as individuals or character sets.
If my memory serves me correctly (Gardner), the Revelation came through an Alfred Kellogg, the youngest of 3 sons to a Kellogg. In his sleep, he started talking. He and his wife bought this attention of their church elders, and it was decided a woman named Christie would sit at the bedside and record the things he said. This took place during ’32 and ’33. There is more to the Gardner story.
The acknowledged racism in the Seventh Day Adventist church precedes this by 50 years, notable by the treatment of Prophetess Sister Ellen White (half cast Negro).
I believe the Holy Quran (Message from the Archangel Gabriel to Mohammad) refers to UB as The Book of Enlightenment, a perspicuous book, and a table set.
I maintain the UB is the panacea for mankind’s ills. Sadly, most of Sodom and the Synagogue of Satan refuse to accept any Revelation, be it the Bhagavad-Gita, Bible, Book of Mormon, Quran, God Calling (Michael as the Risen Jesus ’32) twolisteners.org , or The Urantia Book.
The Second Coming has been happening since 6 June 1996. World leaders, Royalty, Parliaments, & the Churches ARE the AntiChrist. That includes my Catholic church.
I hope this has been helpful.

I think its important to realize the credibility that a known atheist lends to the validity of the book. Dr Saddler was an outspoken atheist and his father in law Kellogg was the Seventh Day Adventist, but that only further shows Gods consistency in how He uses the least likely people to bring about revelation and much like Paul was the opposite of a Christian, DR. Saddler is, in this one sense, at the time the least likely to support or come up with such a universal appeal for all mankind to start loving each other a lot more. Moreover Dr Saddler, being either a racist(which i believe are unsubstantiated claims) or just an atheist (as he openly admitted and was widely known as) at the time he was definitely one of, if not the least likely, well respected persons in the medical profession to come up with such a revelation of love and the beauty that goes on behind the scenes.

Once this book is read, and i fully understand how intimidating just the size, not to mention the depth of it can be and how far it stretches our own abilities to grasp the big picture and to grasp this eternal journey as it really is, i don’t see how after reading this book one could think in their hearts it was written by humans. But for the sake of argument, if we do look at it as thought of and written by humans, it sure wouldn’t have been thought up by one or some racist people who barely believe in God, or whom certainly don’t know His true character coupled with the fact and great oddity they looked not to and have profited nothing from publishing the book. If one wanted to just fascinate people with a good idea they most likely would look to make some money off it, Dr. Saddler nor the Kellogs have taken a single dime from the slow but steady sales. Keep in mind all proceeds are returned to the non-profit cuase of furthering the distribution of it (Bringing it to the whole world, translating it in different languages for national and overseas distribution.) The essence of the entire book is LOVE and that all of us whatever or whomever we believe to be the Creator of this universe are indeed brothers in spirit and eternity. Why would a racist look to promote world peace and join all mankind together in the truth, beauty and goodness of Love (as the book clearly distinguishes as being the essential part of God’s nature, our purpose, as well as the path to peace on earth and brotherhood of all mankind) on his own accord? Doesn’t seem logical a racist would take such a stance!? Unless possibly any racist was clearly shown the light in some unique fashion they simply wouldn’t avert all there lifelong beliefs and teach the Fatherhood of God, the brotherhood of love to all mankind not to mention the whole universe is friendly and set up for us to prosper and grow in love, truth, beauty and goodness as the book indubitably claims, as Dr Saddler would have had to do.

As many have stated this person obviously hasn’t read the book and i suggest to this friend to start with the story of Jesus and skip around to some of His teachings just don’t give up on our pursuit of wisdom and truth and just because something clarifies history or elaborates on past truths or revelations, don’t steer away find for yourself the answers you are looking for. We should never let someone else’s thoughts or opinions limit or control our own thoughts, or limit our own learning of the truth for ourselves. I have read more than several opinions of naysayers of the Urantia Papers and the only common thread is they obviously have not read the book themselves. Please on the dignity or credibility of being a public “opinionist” at least read the First chapter on the nature of the Universal Father and see if you still think a human being could write such a thing.
For any of us doing a little research before diving in to read the book i strongly urge you to read it yourself. Some parts may intimidate us at first or are difficult to comprehend but please skip around look through the parts of the book that appeal to us for so many topics are covered read the parts about the what the angels do or the Tertiary Seconaphim and ask ourselves if a human being could so eloquently explain such manifestation of the Spirits at work. This universe is much much bigger than any of us ever realized and the path to the Father in Paradise however isn’t the next stop. Lucky for us!!?
This book is most unique and we are indeed fortunate to be alive at a time that allows us to have access to such wisdom. Any one who has heard of the book and hasn’t read it i encourage with every ounce of dignity within me to read it for themselves, it will truly change our attitude about loving all our fellow men and the wisdom that lies therein.
      Peace and poise to all.
      ~M

I have read many reviews of the Urantia Book but yours is the worst yet. Your facts are wrong and obviously second hand. I wish you would read it for yourself and then make your own informed decision instead of parroting what some one else has commented on. You are giving a review on a book you haven’t read, how much credibility should we give you?

    • Antimatter

I have been reading the Urantia book for 20 years now and I have yet to find error in what it says. I think this article is narrow minded and biased. At least read the book before you critique it.

    • JoseyMiller

I have read Urantia. It might be a believable stories, but considering Jesus was not mentioned as favored by the Father God for salvation.. I couldn’t take a second reading of the book. It’s another deception of the devil.
