CCTV Cameras And Power Over Ethernet

Technology has developed rapidly in recent times and this includes how network connections are set up. Power over Ethernet (PoE) has been created in order to start optimizing the use of wired Ethernet networks. A regular set up that was used in the past would include two connections. One of the connections would include an electrical connection, whilst the other would be a separate network connection to help relay images to the monitor. This is not the case with the new system in place in the form of Power over Ethernet. All of the transmitting and electrical supplying is done with the use of one connection and as a result, the wiring is reduced.  The purpose of this type of set up is to reduce the amount of installation time, maintenance costs and overall efficiency. With PoE there is an elimination of the need for traditional cabling.  Therefore, material costs are reduced.  Secondly, as there is no need for an electrician to hook up the system to a power supply it is easier to install – saving time and money.

Flexible

Due to the units not being hooked up with a separate electrical supply, this makes the CCTV cameras far more versatile.  There is less of a need for the cameras to be attached to an electrical source as the cameras work via an IP network instead.  As long as there is a Wi-Fi connection, the connection will be safe and secure.

Consistent Results

With a central source being used for all of the powering, it ensures there are less failures and overall more consistency. The data that is being transferred is also backed up automatically to ensure that a malfunction does not cause problems. There are advanced options within the PoE market that include security elements built in. For example, these elements ensure the system shuts down as soon as there is a chance of over-heating.

How Does it Work?

The PoE will only work when the data that is being processed and the electrical current do not run into each other. This can only happen when an injector is put into place for the power source. The injector is responsible for ensuring the current goes through the cables without getting in the way of the data that is also being transmitted. A system that is packed with PoE compatible hardware will work better than one that does not (i.e. cameras, recorders). When there is a component that is not in sync with PoE, this will generally mean the system has to be upgraded. Certain hurdles can be ignored, but others cannot. A ‘picker’ can be used to get around system upgrades for older parts of a current system.  A picker will help target that specific part and give it electricity. It is important to note there are a multitude of benefits with this option. Surveillance equipment is all about reliability, safety and overall performance. Going with a PoE set up is a given in this day and age because of how efficient it is as a whole. It is one of the most cost effective solutions out there and one that is proven to work as soon as it is needed.
