This may mess up Eastern Standard Time: 10,000 year clock being built inside a mountain

In an effort to make one very timely point, Danny Hillis has begun construction on a 10,000 year clock inside a mountain in West Texas.

The clock will have 5 large rooms in the mountain representing 1 year, 10 years, 100 years, 1,000 years and 10,000 year anniversaries. Its chime generator will emit a different ring every day.

The mammoth project reflects his philosophy of focusing on long-term thinking: “He’s been thinking about and working on the clock since 1989… As I see it, humans are now technologically advanced enough that we can create not only extraordinary wonders but also civilization-scale problems. We’re likely to need more long-term thinking,” explained co-collaborator Jeff Bezos.

The clock will tick once a year. It has a century hand and a millennial cuckoo.

And since we’ll have the time, it will take a type of pilgrimage to even get to. “The nearest airport is several hours away by car, and the foot trail to the clock is rugged, rising almost 2,000 feet above the valley floor.”

I’ve booked my trip quarter to a decade, half past a century.
