LG releases a 20-inch, glassless 3D monitor, charges an arm and a leg.

How’s a glass-less 3DTV sound? While we have seen many glimpses of those, from Samsung to Toshiba as well as Microsoft, we have never seen any of those prototypes coming to stores yet. LG is determined to change the landscape, albeit with a baby step first. LG Electronics announced today that they will release a 20-inch glass-less 3D monitor, called DX2000, in Korea this week. The display will use what is known as a parallax barrier. This technology will enable an each eye to see different sets of pixels, effectively cutting the pixel density in half but allowing a person to see 3D movies, videos, and games without those dorky, flimsy glasses. Of course, if the technology sounds familiar to you, it’s because it has been used in Nintendo’s 3DS as well as the LG’s own Optimus 3D and HTC’s Evo 3D. What’s significant about the display itself is that it’s employing what’s known as the “eye tracking” technology. A webcam at the upper end of the display will track the movement of your eyes, then calculate the viewing angle and distance for optimal viewing experience. Hopefully, this means the end of woeful viewing angle for 3D displays when in 3D.

LG is also including a load of features seen in other glass-powered 3D displays. The monitor will include a 3D-2D conversion capability, and interact with the Blu-ray player for a 3D Blu-ray playback.

The monitor is only a 20-inch but the cost of it ellipses that of a 30-inch, IPS display. The display will cost 129 million won, which equals to around $ 1220. That’s even more expensive than the Apple’s 27-inch Cinema Display, which is priced at around $ 900. Hopefully, as more manufacturers try their hands at developing a glass-less 3D display, we’ll see prices go down to a more manageable level. When that time comes, 3D “gimmick” may just take off.
