I’m just over fifty years of age and I can remember those old fashioned hand cranked adding machines. My grandfather had an electric powered adding machine that he used for his restaurant business. My father was trained in slide rule use and used that simple machine during his career in industry. My sister got a electronic calulator in 1975 that was capable of scientific functions. Later, when I went to high school, I was exposed to the world of computers and our math lab was equipped with a Digital computer. We used to program Basic by running punch tape through old teletype machines.
One might think that my generation was the vanguard of technological change. I used to think that until I encountered the Thacher Calculating Instrument. This device is like a slide rule on steroids. One might also say it was taking the slide rule into three dimensions. It is somewhat complex but it still pretty much operates as a regular slide rule.
Why would someone design this incredible thing? Well, it goes to the need to simplify a mathematical process. The average size slide rule is somewhat limited by its length, and the amount of numbers you can print along its working edges. The Thacher instrument, by by using a printed tube, is able to make calculations that would have otherwise needed a ten foot long slide rule!
