AFSPC Milestone: First Advanced Extremely High Frequency Satellite Launch 2nd Anniversary
On this date in 2010, the first Advanced Extremely High Frequency System satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral AFS, Fla., but because of a problem in the satellite vehicle’s Liquid Apogee Engine, it failed to initially rise to its applicable orbit. Through the use of its Hall Current Thruster the first AEHF satellite successfully arrive on-orbit Oct. 24, 2011.

The AEHF System is the follow-on to the Milstar system, augmenting and improving on the capabilities of Milstar by providing ten times the throughput of the 1990s-era Milstar satellites with a substantial increase in coverage for users.
AEHF is a joint service satellite communications system that will provide survivable, near world-wide, secure, protected, and jam-resistant communications for high-priority military ground, sea and air assets. AEHF will provide connectivity across the spectrum of mission areas, including land, air and naval warfare; special operations; strategic nuclear operations; strategic defense; theater missile defense; and space operations and intelligence.
