HTC Announces 8S And 8X Windows Phone Devices.
HTC is back on Windows! What started on Windows Mobile and drifted to a commanding (and now faltering) position on Android has come full circle back to Microsoft’s camp. The rumored HTC 8S and 8X are official, with them bringing potential and current Windows Phone supporters something to think about before clicking “buy” on Nokia’s recently announced ‘wares.
The 8S is the lower-end fodder and features a 4″ WVGA (400 x 800) display, 1 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, , 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of built-in storage (plus SD card slot for additional storage), Beats audio and 5-megapixel camera. Meanwhile, the flagship HTC Windows Phone device, the 8X, ups the ante with a bigger 4.3″ 720p display, 8-megapixel (rear) and 2.1-megapixel (front) cameras, NFC, 16 GB of built-in storage (NO SD slot), 1 GB of RAM, LTE and a dual-core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon processor. Power is provided by an 1,800 mAh battery and ship in four different colors: California Blue, Graphite Black, Flame Red and Limelight Yellow.
What’s interesting about the 8X in particular in regards to the Beats Audio is that HTC has implemented two amps – one for the headphone jack and one for the speaker. We’re not sure as to the benefits of this yet (why can’t one amp do both?) but will let you know once we find out more. Another nice perk comes by way of the 8X’s front-facing 2.1-megapixel camera which features an 88-degree ultra-wide lens that HTC claims will allow up to 4 humans to crowd into a video chat at once. Also, said camera will support 1080p video calls.
Carrier support will come to three of the “big four” carriers: AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon (sorry Sprint customers).
On the surface, the 8X looks like a formidable foe to Nokia’s flagship 920 in terms of specs. Though, we’d still give Nokia the nod if design is also a consideration. Those Fins just know how to cater to the design conscious. That’s not to say the 8X is “ugly”, either.
Ultimately it will come down to personal preference. That said, if you were put on the spot this very moment, which would you choose?
