Rumors peg LG Optimus G headed stateside as LG Eclipse 4G LTE, could also be next Nexus Offering

The LG Optimus G was recently officially announced. We missed it yesterday, but saw plenty of information about it floating around. The device is set to go on sale in Korea starting next week followed by key global markets in October. A secondary report from the Associate Press also puts the Optimus G here in the states in November as the LG Eclipse 4G LTE. No doubt headed towards AT&T and/or Sprint. There has been talk of various versions landing, one with an 8MP camera and others with the current 13MP camera.

Key Specifications of the Optimus G include:

  • Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with 1.5GHz Quad-Core Krait CPUs and LTE
  • Operating System: Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (upgradeable to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean)
  • Network: 2G / 3G / LTE
  • Display: 4.7-inch WXGA True HD IPSPlus (1280 x 768 pixels) / 15:9 ratio
  • Memory: 32GB
  • RAM: 2GB DDR
  • Camera: 13.0MP or 8.0MP rear / 1.3MP front
  • Battery: 2,100mAh (570Wh/L) / Talk time: 15 hours / Standby: 335 hours
  • Size: 131.9 x 68.9 x 8.45mm
  • Weight: 145g
  • Other: Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, USB2.0 HS, A-GPS, MHL and DLNA, NFC

All in all it sounds great and from checking out screenshots from Phil from AndroidCentral, we are pretty impressed. Even if it is LG software. There is a lot more going on though than just the official announcement. LG and Qualcomm have an event planned in New York for tomorrow. This will be another LG Optimus G announcement and should prove to be carrier labels and timelines for launch in the states. T-Mobile could easily get into the mix somehow, although they already have some pretty big devices coming. We can hope that LG has worked out deals with all four major players much like Samsung has done. It forces the carriers to be more competitive in services rather than devices. After all, they are service providers.

But what about these previous rumor about multiple OEM manufactured Nexus devices landing this year? Well, Androidandme has a little insight on that front that might prove to be useful. Their sources, the ones who have uncovered every Nexus device to date, have both advised that they expect LG to create a Nexus branded phone this year. No one could offer up any specs, names, benchmarks or anything else to point towards it though. LG has a real chance of either leading the Nexus charge this year or at least being part of a more open OEM straight Nexus device sales plan. I mean seriously, ‘G’ being their new device? It wouldn’t take much to swap out their software for an AOSP based experience and drop it on the Play Store with a Nexus G name attached. It could help get LG back on track for profits and exposure.

Do you think it would be wise of LG to jump into the Nexus market with some of their latest and greatest hardware? An Optimus G sporting pure Google Jelly Bean would make for a pretty stellar device we think. We still don’t know for certain if Google is going to open up that market or keep it to one manufacturer year. With Samsung dominating the scene the last two, it might be nice for someone else to grab some lime light.
