How does FabMart operate?
Since villages do not have computers at homes, FabMart had to come up with an innovative solution to bring the computers to them. Thanks to the tablet PCs which are becoming more affordable, the company has chosen to equip their rural ambassadors, or as there are called; FabMart Franchisees with touch-screen tablets. These designated people are to be approached by people / families who wish to log a purchase. After taking the details for registration, the user chooses the products on the tablet itself & a virtual list gets ready. Thereafter, the back-end warehouse delivers the goods to the franchisee & the end-buyer has to visit the stall to collect the same. With flexible payment options that do not rely on credit-cards or internet banking, FabMart has apparently empowered these people to shop in the way their urban counterparts take for granted.
Given the affordability of the hardware, we think a more widely distributed model would have worked wonders. That is, FabMart could have chosen to hire more representatives who could roam the region collecting orders & then could return with the goods.
