Will Key Lime Pie Android 4.2 be Unveiled on October 29th?
Sometimes the rumor mill spins out of control. This happens quite frequently in the tech world. New devices, software, and accessories get leaked out, and the little child inside us all get ecstatic as if we are waking up on Christmas morning. In the Android world, the LG Nexus 4 is on the horizon, and people are still wondering if the new phone will feature Android’s next offspring Key Lime Pie Android 4.2.
Now we have seen numerous leaked pictures of the LG Nexus 4. Some considered fakes, but most have been actual pictures of the new flagship phone. One in particular that caught a lot of people’s attention, was the one picture of the phone in its “About Phone” settings. Software version showed that it was indeed Android 4.1.2. It made sense to me, it seemed legit, and a lot of people agreed with it. Shortly after, a 4.1.2 update started floating around the community, first with the Nexus 7, then with GSM Galaxy Nexus devices. Question is, was it just someone with a rooted LG Optimus G that threw some Android 4.1.2 on it, or was it indeed what we will see on October 29th. But as we draw closer to the October 29th date where Google will be unveiling the LG Nexus 4, we still have to speculate that Google will also unveil Android 4.2.
In the business sense, it is a good idea. Unveiling a new OS would get the community excited once again, and the fact that Apple is planning on releasing the iPad mini, as well as Windows 8 being released to the wild with their new tablet; firing out a new device with a brand new OS would get a lot of praise in the tech world. With that though, I think there would be quite a bit of backlash.
Android fragmentation has also been a key issue when it comes to Android. The fact that there are so many devices and UI’s, Google and OEM’s struggle to get updates to these particular phones. A big chunk of Android users are sitting on Gingerbread still, and have not got a taste of how much Android has been overhauled with ICS. So releasing yet another OS version would throw them 3 steps behind with an outdated software. That would be quite unfair, and Google should be working with the OEM’s to get their phones closer to the top of the Android pyramid. But wait, why don’t we just keep releasing phones with the new OS’s so people upgrade their phones early? Ah yes, that is probably a better solution and the pockets get thicker. I know, that was a little stab to corporate America giants, but could not resist pointing that out.
So when it comes down to it, it is anyone’s guess. I personally think it is really too soon to release a new OS. Jelly Bean came out just 4 months ago. As much as I would love to try some pie with lime in it (and keys?) I feel it is a bit rushed. Let’s settle down a little bit here. Let’s get these Gingerbread people to ICS before they decide to go that devil fruit device. My prediction is that the LG Nexus 4 will have a souped up Jelly Bean and the next Nexus phone from a different OEM will be getting that Key Lime Pie. Just my opinion, I am probably wrong. We will all find out come October 29th. Looking forward to it. Let us know what you guys think.
