Big Story Weather from November 9-11: The winter storm system moved through the Northern Plains over the weekend and brought with it some severe weather and also winter weather to the Western Dakotas and Montana. The Pacific Northwest dealt with some showers and cooler weather this past weekend, while the Northeast was finally given a break from all the hard weather allowing for better efforts for restoring the power that is still out to many folks in the region.

Weather Outlook for November 12: Low pressure moving through the Great Lakes and its associated frontal boundary will make its way through the Midwest and the Gulf Coast today bringing showers and thunderstorms to the region. High pressure will be building in rapidly behind the cold front bringing some very cold air to places this evening such as Southern Texas and Southern New Mexico where frost and freeze warnings are in effect. Also another weak upper level trough will begin to move onshore over the Pacific Northwest bringing a few showers to Northern California and also Southern Oregon today. Below is the weather for a few select cities.

International Weather Outlook for November 12: Low pressure moving through Japan and Korea will bring showers and colder weather. High pressure over Southeast China will bring partly cloudy skies to this region and also it will weaken the Monsoonal trough over India for the day. High pressure over Eastern Europe will bring partly cloudy skies to this region as well. A low pressure area approaching England will bring showers to the region and also the frontal boundary will extend southward into Western Europe bringing showers to this region as well for places like Spain and France. High pressure will bring nice weather to Southern portion of South America. High pressure will also influence most of Australia bringing partly cloudy skies and nice weather to the region. Here is the forecast for a few select international cities.

Tokyo Japan: Mostly Cloudy with showers and a low near 10C.

Hong Kong China: Partly Cloudy with a low near 17C.

Singapore: Partly Cloudy with a low near 22C.

Madrid Spain: Partly Cloudy with a few showers and a low near 8C.

Sydney Australia: Partly Cloudy and warm with a low near 14C.

November 12, 2012 Storm Tracker Update:

Atlantic Basin: An area of low pressure is moving towards England this morning which will bring showers to the region and moderate winds. A second low pressure area is off the coast of Africa. This area will slowly drift towards the east with winds around 20kts; however, it is not expected to impact land over the next 24hrs.

Eastern Pacific: A deep area of low pressure to the Southwest of California will slowly push eastward as it forms into a cut-off low off the coast bringing the chance to see showers move into Southern California by mid-week.

Gulf of Alaska: Area of low pressure is now entering the Southwestern part of the Gulf of Alaska. This low pressure will continue to move towards the Northeast over the next 24hrs creating high winds and seas in the region.

Central Pacific: All is quiet in this region this morning.

Western Pacific: One area of low pressure is currently impacting Japan and will slowly drift off to the east later today. However, it will bring showers to the island of Japan today. A second area of low pressure has developed off the west coast of the Philippines and this area of low pressure is moving slowly towards the west and has a central pressure of 1012mb and winds upwards to 25kts.

South Indian Ocean: One area of strong convection is located to the South of India but should remain in this region as the strong high pressure to the north is keeping this wave south and should create no impacts to land over the next 24hrs.

Southern Hemisphere: No major weather features in this region this morning.

Five Day Storm Index Outlook for November 12-16:

New York NY: A nice day in store for today, however tomorrow there could be some slight impacts as the frontal boundary moves through bringing light rain. After that the rest of the period looks good.

Gulfport MS: Today there is a moderate chance of seeing impacts with a line of storms moving through the area this morning up to around 12PM. After that a cold a dry week in store with no impacts forecasted for the region.

Sioux Falls SD: A few left over snow showers moving through this morning may bring a slight impact. After that a quiet week in store with no impacts forecasted for the region just some colder air.

Billings MT: A nice week in store, however by the 16th the region could be seeing the next frontal boundary moving into the area which will bring some rain to start with and also a slight chance of impacts to the region.

Portland OR: Today will be mostly cloudy with no impacts forecasted, however the rest of the week showers will be in the region creating a slight impact for the remainder of the week.

Climate Watch for November 7-11:

New York NY: Temps started the period about 7-14 degrees below average and then slowly warmed to around 2-3 degrees below average before finishing the period around 9 degrees above average.

Gulfport MS: Temps started the period about 4-6 degrees below average followed by a warming of temps rising to around 1-6 degrees above average.

Sioux Falls SD: Temps started the period running about 3-11 degrees above average however by the 11th a frontal boundary moved through dropping the temps to around 15 degrees below average.

Billings MT: Temps started the period around 23 degrees above average and then the cold front passed through on the 8th and temps fell to around 2-14 degrees below average followed by another shot of colder air on the 10th which sent temps to around 21-27 degrees below average for this time of the year.

Portland OR: Temps started the period about 1-2 degrees above average and then clouds and rain moved into the region keeping the temps about 7-9 degrees below average.

Major Weather Impacts Discussion for November 12, 2012:

Day 1-3: High pressure will bring nice conditions to the Northeast for one more day, while the frontal boundary moves into the Southeast and Gulf Coast today. A strong and cold area of high pressure will take hold of the center of the country for the next few days bringing some very cold air to the region. The end of this period will have the frontal boundary pushing up the East Coast and high pressure over the majority of the rest of the country with a small area of frontal precipitation moving into the Pacific Northwest.

Day 4-7: The period will start with the majority of the country under high pressure and one upper level low slowly moving towards the California coast. By the end of this period high pressure will be in control of the weather over the Northeast back into the Plains, while a feature will begin to develop southeast of the Carolina coast that will need to be watched. The frontal boundary will begin to make its way onshore over the Pacific Northwest.

Day 8-12: This period will start with the high pressure still over the majority of the Northeast, while that low pressure over the Atlantic will slowly start drifting westward with a pressure of 1008mb during this time period. Also high pressure will be in control of the weather over the Ohio and Tennessee River Valleys while some return flow moisture will setup along the Western Gulf coast and the next strong 990mb low will begin to approach the California coastline. The end of this period will have the low over the Northeast heading back out to sea. A weak area of high pressure will ridge southward over the East Coast and another low pressure system will begin to move through the Northern Plains extending southward into the Gulf Coast region. A weak ridge will be over the Southwest and another low pressure system will begin to move over the Pacific Northwest.

Day 13-15: The period will begin with low pressure moving through the Northeast and the frontal boundary extending back into the Gulf Coast. A strong cold 1032mb high begins to move across the Northern Plains and a 1002mb low begins to work across the Pacific towards the Pacific Northwest. The end of this period will see high pressures on both of the coasts while a weak Alberta Clipper system begins to move through the Northern Plains. The rest of the country is fairly quiet.

Today’s Spotlight Forecast is for Mobile AL:

Monday: Mostly cloudy with scattered Thunderstorms. High temps will rise to 74F early and then by this afternoon start to fall sharply as the cold front moves through the area. Overnight lows will fall to around 40F.

Tuesday: Partly cloudy and colder with high temps only around 60F. Winds will be from the Northeast around 8-13mph and overnight lows around 37F.

Wednesday: Partly cloudy and a little bit warmer as high temps rise to around 65F, with winds from the Northeast around 5-10mph as overnight lows again fall to around 44F.

Thursday: Partly cloudy and warmer as high temps rise to around 68F, with the winds still from the Northeast around 5-10mph as overnight lows fall to around 47F.

Friday: Partly cloudy with high temps around 68F, winds will be from the Northeast at 5-10mph and overnight lows will fall to around 48F.

Question: Why do the winds get so strong behind a cold front when it passes?

Answer: The reason that we see very strong winds after a cold front passes has to do with a term known in weather as pressure gradient. What this means is that the isobars on the weather map are closer together as the next area of high pressure is rapidly moving in behind the cold front which creates a strong gradient over the area allowing for these strong winds to blow from the Northwest and sometimes these winds will be log lasting of more than one day.

Green Energy Weather Report for November 12:

Wave Energy: A frontal area to the west of the region will push some nice size waves into the Pacific Northwest today creating a great source for wave energy and also along the Gulf Coast as the frontal boundary passes through today will increase the wave action in this region.

Solar Energy: High pressure moving in over the Plains will create a nice area for solar energy along with an area over the Southwest and another solar energy prominent place today will be found up in the Northeast.

Wind Energy: Right behind the cold front over the Plains and into the upper Mississippi River Valley will be a great place to find wind energy today.

Hydro-Energy: With the front beginning to move through the Southern Mississippi River Valley expect this region to be great for hydro power today along with the Ohio River valley as the frontal boundary also begins to move through this region as well.

November 12 Weather and Your Wallet (New Orleans LA):

Dining: A few showers in the area will make it a good morning to eat breakfast inside before heading to work. Also this evening if you plan to eat outdoors you might want a jacket as temps drop into the 40’s.

Transportation: A few minor slowdowns with the showers this morning. Once they pass through the area just take it easy on the bridges as the winds will still be strong.

Shopping: This afternoon looks to be the best time to get out and enjoy some shopping as the rain will clear out. This evening you will want to take a jacket as temps drop.

Electricity: No problem this morning as temps are still in the lower 70’s, however this evening after the front passes the temps are going to drop fast and get into the lower 40’s which will leave the area with a 7.5HDD forecast for tonight.

Agriculture: The showers clear off by 11AM and the rest of the day will be good for agriculture in the region.

Construction: The showers this morning and then the stronger winds will make construction work a tad bit more challenging today especially if there are any crane operations going on.

Outdoor Venues: A few passing showers this morning will lead to a nice afternoon walk in the park. However, this evening you will want a jacket if you plan to walk outside or attend an outdoor event as temps will be colder.
