Delhi Traffic Police Will Soon Get E-Challan For Penalizing Traffic Offenders; Project Gets Government Nod

The electronic challan project to penalize traffic offenders in Delhi had come to a standstill due to budget problems. The Times Of India has reported that Delhi’s State Government has officially given the nod to the project to continue. The 14 crore project had already been awarded to a major Telecom company.

The project entails the provision and distribution of 1200 handheld devices  by the end of the year. These devices will be able to collect traffic fines via credit/debit cards. The information will be transmitted to a central server which will process the details in addition to updating its database with the records. This is exactly how the merchant POS devices work. The added feature of this project is the instant digitization of violation data, something which takes up a lot of time and money in traditional methods.

Besides transacting payments, the device can also access the central server to check for traffic offence history of the concerned person and their vehicle. Since, it is a tedious job to check whether all offences being registered via the traditional methods are repeat offences, the device will bring about greater efficiency towards the traffic authority’s workings in the capital. Those with a history of repeated offences will face heavier fines, thus leading to lesser offences in the future.

The execution of this project might not be far off according to Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Satyendra Garg.

“As per the contract, the devices are expected to be ready within 90 days but we are planning a partial launch much ahead of this. Depending on the logistics, some of the devices should be in use by December-end or early January,”

These portable  mini-computers will have features and attachments like GPRS, GIS, camera and printers. This will help the police to get instant evidence against offenders. These digital images and data can then be transmitted to a central server. The handheld devices will be able to function offline as well and will be able to store around 500 challans at a time. The memory available on these devices is said to be expandable to 16 GB. Motorists will also have an easier time with the whole thing. The device will notify the central server when a vehicle has been towed. The owner of the vehicle can get the location of his /her vehicle by calling a dedicated helpline.

Initiatives like this can greatly help in the governance and smooth functioning of cities around India and not just Delhi. There is a growing need for such enterprise connectivity solutions in the law and order area. Use of the latest technology will ultimately benefit citizens as things will work much more smoothly than before. Such Internet enabled technology can greatly benefit many organisations and people in various other sectors also like healthcare, Security etc.
