Keymonk Keyboard: Insanely Fast, Requires Your Full Attention

Do you like swipey/slidey/sweepy keyboards? I do. Well, Google does too and finally got on board with the trend on their latest stock Android 4.2 keyboard. I find swiping to be much faster than traditional letter pecking even with word prediction. It also makes typing one handed very easy.

The developer of Keymonk took the swipe idea and took the next step. Why be limited to to swiping with one hand, when you have two? Yes, that’s right, there’s a keyboard that uses two handed swiping. It’s insanely fast, check out the video from the developer; he should have a Guinness World Record for typing.

An Android Pit article, first brought this app to my attention, so I decided to try it out. The keyboard takes a few minutes to get used, but the same can be said when switching between any keyboard. Those used to swiping will adapt quickly though. With a little practice, you can be blazing fast in no time. The keyboard works best with two hands in landscape mode and requires your full attention, so really don’t be texting and driving with this one (although you shouldn’t be anyway ). When you first start out, the app give a brief tutorial. I found it to be brutal if you spelled words wrong unfortunately, it’s not as forgiving as other keyboards and you cannot add your own words to its dictionary. Keymonk is still a relatively new app, so I’m sure a this will be improved in a few updates.

Go ahead and try it for yourself, there’s a free and paid ($3.99) version. I couldn’t find a difference between the two, both app descriptions are the exact same. Try it out for free and if you like it, drop the developer some beer change and get the paid version.

(Side note: I spell it swipe and not the more common swype; I’m not a fan of the Swype keyboard after Nuance bought them out and killed my favorite FlexT9 keyboard and never ported its best delete/word prediction features to Swype. It’s better than others, but I kept using FlexT9 until the latest stock Android keyboard was boosted from a 4.2 build.)

MULTITOUCH ISSUESSome devices, including high-end devices, have defective multi-touch support. If you see the Keymonk touch indication circles flicker or change colors while sweeping with both fingers, that may be an indication that your device does not support multi-touch well.Keep each finger at its side of the keyboard and avoid bumping them into one another since it might confuse the touch screen.
