Thanksgiving A Record-Setting Day For Instagram
In between chowing down on turkey and stuffing, watching the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys football games, and spending quality time with the family, Americans apparently found time to snap a few pictures on Thanksgiving, as Turkey Day 2012 was a record-setting day for photo-sharing website Instagram.
In a November 23 blog post, Instagram officials announced more than 10 million photos mentioning Thanksgiving-theme words in their captions were shared through the social networking website on Thursday.
“For several hours throughout the day, more than 200 photos about Thanksgiving were posted every second,” they added. “Overall, the day broke all Instagram records as we saw the number of shared photos more than double from the day before, making it our busiest day so far.”
The service peaked at 12:40pm Pacific time, with Thanksgiving-related images being posted at a rate of 226 per second, according to Emil Protalinski of The Next Web. The company said the number of photos shared on Thursday was more than double the average number of photos uploaded to the service during a typical 24-hour period, he added.
In comparison, the largest single event in Instagram history had previously been Hurricane Sandy, which saw 800,000 photos posted to the service, CEO Kevin Systrom said, according to Slashgear‘s Craig Lloyd. During that late October storm, an average of 10 photos per second were being uploaded to the service, added Joanna Stern of ABC News.
“We’re thrilled to see people use Instagram to share their holidays,” the company said. “Whether celebrating with friends and family or sharing photos with them halfway across the globe, we’re excited to see the intimacy and immediacy of the Instagram experience bring us all closer together over this holiday season.”
Instagram was acquired by Facebook in September — the same month when the five-billionth photo was uploaded to the social media service, Protalinski said. One week after the acquisition, the service surpassed the 100 million user mark, he added.
“Given how fast Instagram keeps adding users, we expect this record to not last long,” Lloyd pointed out. “Christmas is right around the corner, and we’d be surprised if users weren’t taking pictures of snow, Christmas trees, and candy canes. New Years is also right around the corner, which could see a surge in photo uploads as well.”
