Youtube Partners With Ministry Of External Affairs And Anurag Kashyap To Launch The ‘India Is’ Initiative

Google India and Youtube have announced the launch of a unique new initiative which focuses on Indian short films. These films are supposed to throw a light on the wonderful diversity of India captured in short bursts of reel. This partnership will entail a contest where amateur film-makers across the world and especially India,  will be asked to submit 5 minute films focusing on this theme ‘India is… a visual journey’.

Youtube launched the initiative at an event here in Mumbai where prominent Googlers like Nikesh Arora, Rajan Anandan, Gautam Anandan and Adama Smith spoke about Youtube and its rising popularity in India. Representing the Public Diplomacy Division of the Ministry of External Affairs was Riya Ganguly Das, who serves as its Joint Secretary. Anurag Kashyap, Riya Ganguly Das and Anurag Kashyap together launched a special Youtube channel called India Is for the initiative.

As per the partnership, Anurag Kashyap and his team of directors will be producing five showcase short films pertaining to following themes – ‘India is incredible’, ‘India is unforgettable’ and ‘India is wherever you are’. These films are going to be made in association with Viacom 18 motion pictures and Anurag Kashyap’s own production company, Anurag Kashyap Films Pvt. Ltd.

As far the film-making competition is concerned, these showcase films will be made so that they can inspire amateur film-makers in the country and abroad to shoot their own 5 minute films and enter the competition. 9 winners will be chosen by the jury on the above three thematic categories and there will be one overall winner. Prizes include a EOS Canon Mark II Camera + Lens and weekend getaways at exotic locations in India, courtesy of Taj Holidays.

Before they launched the campaign, the Google guys spoke about the how original content creators from India will be the next big thing. They gave examples of how Youtube has given local content creators across the globe access to an International audience. User generated content on Youtube will most definitely change the way the game is played in the country and it is a good thing. So if you believe that you can make an awesome short film, this initiative is an excellent opportunity for you.
