Big Story Weather from December 5: The Southeast and Gulf Coast saw some much needed rain yesterday associated with the frontal boundary and low pressure over the Northern Gulf. The Great Lakes and Northern Plains saw some nice weather a tad bit above normal again as temps were running in the 40-50F range for the region. The frontal boundary over the Northern Rockies brought some snow to the higher elevations and rain to the valleys, while the Northwest dealt with more rain showers yesterday.

Weather Outlook for December 6: High pressure over the Southeast will bring nice weather to the region and this will extend northward into the Mid-Atlantic and parts of the Northeast. A low pressure over Texas and Oklahoma will begin to slowly move eastward and bring a chance of showers to the region. Another low pressure will begin to develop in the Rockies and this will have to be watched as our next potential major weather maker for the Plains. Showers will continue in the Northwest. Below is the weather for a few select cities.

Buffalo NY: Mostly Cloudy/Isolated Showers: 44F

Gulfport MS: Partly Cloudy: 72F

Sioux Falls SD: Mostly Cloudy with evening Snow Showers: 32F

Boise ID: Partly Cloudy: 44F

Portland OR: Mostly Cloudy with Showers: 47F

International Weather Outlook for December 6: Low pressure moving through Northern Japan will bring a few snow showers to Sapporo, otherwise look for high pressure over the Koreas to bring partly cloudy skies to the region. This will also extend back into Eastern China. High pressure over the Tibetan Plateau will bring nice weather to the region. Low pressure moving through Eastern Europe will bring showers to the region. Another area of low pressure over England will bring showers to London and parts of Spain and France. A weak frontal boundary will pass through the tip of South America today bringing a few showers to the area. High pressure is moving to the east of Australia and will bring another frontal boundary across the country increasing the chances of seeing showers throughout most of the country today along with increased clouds. Here is the forecast for a few select international cities.

Tokyo Japan: Partly Cloudy with a low near 6C.

Hong Kong China: Partly Cloudy with a low near 14C.

Singapore: Mostly Cloudy with a low near 23C.

London England: Showers and breezy with a low near 1C.

Perth Australia: Partly Cloudy with a low near 18C.

December 6, 2012 Storm Tracker Update:

Atlantic Basin: Low pressure moving towards England, Spain and France will bring showers and higher elevation snows to the region. Another area of low pressure over the Eastern Atlantic will slowly start to push northeastward over the next couple of days. Low pressure off the east coast of Canada will continue to push towards Iceland over the next 24-36 hours. Low pressure moving through the Rockies will make its way into the Plains by later this afternoon and Friday bringing a moderate band of snowfall to the region.

Eastern Pacific: An area of low pressure is moving across the Central Pacific and will make its way towards the US West Coast by later this weekend. Another area of low pressure is moving out of the Pacific and into the Western Gulf of Alaska. This area of low pressure will start to bring an increase in winds and seas over Alaska in the coming days along with more moderate snows to the region.

Western Pacific: Typhoon Bopha continues to track towards the west-northwest this morning. Winds are around 65kts and it will continue to weaken and should become a tropical storm later today or early tomorrow. Elsewhere in the Pacific we have an area of low pressure that is moving across the dateline and will head into the Gulf of Alaska within the next 24-36 hours. Another strong area of low pressure is moving through Northeast Russia this morning and the associated frontal boundary is bringing snow showers to Northern Japan. Another area of low pressure is moving through Central Russia this morning and will continue to track towards the east over the next couple of days.

Indian Ocean: An area of low pressure is moving through the Central Indian Ocean and should remain away from any land just increasing winds and seas in the open oceans.

Southern Hemisphere: A low pressure approaching the tip of South America will bring increased showers to the region. Also look for another area of low pressure to move away from Australia. However, a few lingering showers can still be expected in the region today.

Five Day Storm Index Outlook for December 6-10:

Buffalo NY: The period will see on and off rain showers today making slight impacts. As the colder air moves into the region they will begin to see snowfall and this will lead to the potential of the rest of the period seeing slight impacts.

Gulfport MS: During the first few days high pressure will keep the weather nice. However, by the 9th look for the next frontal boundary to move through bringing showers and thunderstorms to the region bringing a slight chance of an impact to the region.

Sioux Falls SD: Today a few morning showers will give way to snow this evening when the colder air gets in place and the light snow starts to fall leaving today as a slight impact day. Tomorrow a chance of seeing heavier snowfall in the region has brought the impact to a Moderate impact and then another chance for some light snow on the 9th.

Boise ID: The weather will give this area a break today, but on the 7th showers and mountain snows will bring a slight impact to the region and this will also be a slight impact on the 8th.

Portland OR: The frontal systems just keep on moving into the region and will keep this area in a slight impact for the next five days.

Climate Watch for December 1-5:

Buffalo NY: A very warm past few days in the region as temps have averaged between 6-13 degrees above average with a few days getting as warm as 19-25 degrees above average.

Gulfport MS: The period started with temps about 5-7 degrees above average and then rose to around 8 degrees above average for the remainder of the period.

Sioux Falls SD: The entire period has seen temps about 14-28 degrees above average for this time of year.

Boise ID: The period has seen well above average temps in the range of 15-22 degrees for the past five days.

Portland OR: The period started with temps about 3-6 degrees above average followed by a brief period with temps 6-10 degrees above average and then yesterday returned to around 4 degrees above average.

Major Weather Impacts Discussion for December 6, 2012:

Day 1-3: A frontal boundary will begin to move into the Northern Plains tonight and tomorrow and this will be the focus for potential heavy snowfall. The Southern Plains and Gulf Coast will enjoy a nice day today and also the Southeast will see nice weather with the exception being Florida where showers will spread through the area. The Pacific Northwest will be dealing with more rain and mountain snows. The middle of the period will have the low pressure moving into the Ohio River Valley and along with that expect to see increased showers through the region. Another potent low will be moving into the Northern Rockies at this time.

Day 4-7: The period will start with high pressure over the Northeast and the approaching frontal boundary will push into the Western Great Lakes there will be a large swath of snow that sets up over the Dakotas and Minnesota on the backside of this low. The associated frontal boundary will move into the Southern Plains and Gulf Coast region. High pressure will be in control out west. The period will end with the frontal boundary pushing out into the East Coast and the associated cold front will drag into the Southeast. High pressure will setup over the Southern Plains and Southwest while another frontal boundary moves into the Northern Plains.

Day 8-12:  The period will start with high pressure along the Eastern seaboard which will spread westward into the Gulf Coast region. An area of low pressure will move into the Northern Plains bringing another chance for rain and snow to the region. High pressure will ease the rains along the West Coast during this time. Towards Day 10 there will be an area of potential low pressure that will move along the Northern Gulf Coast. The period will end with high pressure in the Northeast and another frontal boundary along the Gulf Coast and the low pressure moving through the Northern Plains. Also we will see the onshore flow return to the Pacific Northwest.

Day 13-15: The period will start with a very significant low pressure moving through the Great Lakes and the associated frontal boundary extending into the Gulf Coast region. There is the chance we could be looking at a significant severe weather outbreak during this time period along the Gulf Coast and Southeast. Low pressure will be back over the Rockies bringing snow to the Northern Plains and also rain to the West Coast along with mountain snows. The period will end with a very active weather pattern in place over most of the country.

Thursday: Partly Cloudy and cool with a high near 24F, winds from the North around 10-15mph and overnight lows around 19F.

Friday: Partly Cloudy and a tad bit warmer with a high near 31F, winds from the Southeast around 15-20mph as overnight lows fall to around 12F.

Saturday: Partly Cloudy and cooler with a high near 16F, winds from the North around 15-20mph as overnight lows fall to around 3F.

Sunday: Mostly Cloudy with periods of snow some accumulations of around 1-3 are likely with high temps near 20F. Winds will be from the South around 15-20mph as overnight lows fall to around 16F.

Monday: Partly Cloudy and cool with a high near 23F, winds will be from the Northwest around 15-20mph as overnight lows fall to around 12F.

Answer: The polar front jet is made up of temperature contrast between the warmer air to the south and the colder air to the north. In respect to that we note that the polar front jet is the strongest during the fall and spring when we have the largest temperature contrast between the warm air and the cold air.

Green Energy Weather Report for December 6:

Wave Energy: The continued on shore flow of the frontal boundaries along the Pacific Northwest will create another good wave energy day for the region. The frontal boundary that will be pushing up along Florida will bring larger waves to the East Coast of the region today.

Solar Energy: Good places for solar energy today will be the Gulf Coast and back into the Southern Plains along with the Southwest as all of these places will have an extended period of sunshine today.

Wind Energy: The Northwest will again today have a good share of wind power potential and also on the backside of the front that will be moving through the Northern Plains and then downwind of the eastern lakes.

Hydro-Energy: The on shore flow in the Pacific Northwest will provide extensive help in hydro energy for the region. The Northern Plains will also see some assistance from rain and snow in the region and the Northern portion of Florida will have a few passing showers.

December 6 Weather and Your Wallet (San Diego CA):

Dining: An excellent day to enjoy lunch outside as the weather will be very nice. This evening you may need a light jacket as temps will get near 59F.

Transportation: No problems with your commute today.

Shopping: A very comfortable day to get some of that holiday shopping done. If you are heading out this evening you may want a light jacket.

Electricity: No major issues, but look for a small window between 12AM-5AM when you may need to turn on the heater as we are looking for 5.5HDD’s for the day.

Agriculture: A good day to head out to the vineyards and get some work done as there will be no issues from the weather.

Construction: Many projects that are going on right now will have great weather to keep moving forward and also if there is any outdoor window cleaning work that needs to get done today is an excellent day for that as well.

Outdoor Venues: Partly Cloudy skies and light winds with temps in the 60’s makes for a great day to head down to the beach and boardwalk and enjoy the afternoon with the pet or friends. If you are out this evening after sunset make sure to grab a light jacket for the night.
