Google Shows What The World Searched In 2012

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Right after Twitter released its 2012 review, Google has released its yearly review of what the world searched for this year. The review titled Google Zeitgeist 2012 takes a look at all that happened this year right from Arab Spring to Hurricane Sandy. Here is the video that Google has released.

The report shows that there were close to 1.2 trillion searches made on Google this year in 146 languages. The searches have been neatly sorted under categories like Searches, Images, Athletes, Events, People, Feature Films, TV Shows, Performing artists, Consumer Electronics, Airlines and Google+ Hashtags.

The report also takes into account the searches made in individual countries. Checking out the stats for India makes for some interesting results. The number one search term which was trending in India was that for the IBPS clerk exam. This was followed by ‘GATE Exams’. This shows that the number one priority among most Indians using Google is to look out for competitive exams and recruiting exams. The search term that follows it will give you a chuckle. Sunny Leone was the third most trending search term in the country. Other top search terms were for the movies Rowdy Rathore and Ek Tha Tiger.

Sunny Leone tops the list of trending people that Indians searched for on Google, followed by Rajesh Khanna, Poonam Pandey (!), Alia Bhatt and Nirmal Baba. Given these results and how some prominent models featured on the list, I can conclude that Indian men were doing more Google searches than Indian women. Kerala was the most sought after travel destination on Google, followed by Taj Mahal, Wagah Border, Vaishno Devi and Amarnath. Top news searches were made for Sensex, Vilasrao Deshmukh, Hurricane Sandy, Anna Hazare and Aseem Trivedi’s cartoons.

Google’s Zeitgeist reports are fascinating because they are completely automated and data based. The algorithms crank up this these reports, thus giving you an unadulterated look into the minds and desires of people during a year. Many years in the future when we look back, we can safely say that reports like these will make for interesting history lessons. We can thus use search terms to chart out our progress as humans and society. This blows my mind every time I think of it.

You can check the whole review on the Google Zeitgeist Website.
