Instagram Images No Longer Displayed On Twitter Cards Layout

It’s official: Instagram has officially bitten back at Twitter, removing their support for Twitter’s Cards layout. Now, when an Instagram user tweets an image, there will only be a link instead of an embedded photo. These images can still be seen via the link, but not embedded with the text, as it once was.

Twitter has been lashing out against their partners for the past several months, forcing them to adhere to very strict guidelines and locking out those who choose to not play nicely. LinkedIn, for instance, lost the ability to send Tweets to Twitter from their site, though these users can send LinkedIn updates to their accounts from Twitter.

Companies who develop Twitter clients have been forced to keep their rosters underneath a certain number of users. Tapbots, creator of popular Twitter client Tweetbot recently blamed the high price tag on their new Mac app ($20) on Twitter’s harsh limits on how many users a Twitter client can have.

Instagram and Twitter have also butted heads in the past when the latter blocked Instagram users from using its friend finder service.

Since that time, Instagram has been purchased by social giant and significant Twitter competitor, Facebook.

Now, it’s Instagram who is biting Twitter.

Last week, many Twitter users began to notice that Instagram photos were showing up in an odd way in their timeline. These photos, were they displayed at all, were cropped down to a smaller size, revealing only a portion of the image. Twitter acknowledged the problem and was quick to point the finger of blame at Instagram. Later that day, Instagram’s CEO Kevin Systrom admitted his company had been responsible for disabling the service, saying Instagram would no longer support Twitter’s Cards method for displaying images in-line with the accompanying Tweet text.

“We want to direct users to where the content lives originally,” explained Systrom to All Things D at the LeWeb conference in Paris last week.

“Where do you go to interact with [an Instagram] image? We want that to be instagram.com because that’s a better user experience.”

Twitter yesterday announced that Instagram had finally and officially cut of support for Cards, saying: “Instagram has disabled photo integration with Twitter. As a result, photos are no longer appearing in Tweets or user photo galleries. While tweeting links to Instagram photos is still possible, you can no longer view the photos on Twitter, as was previously the case.”

When using an official Twitter app or the Twitter Web site, images would be displayed in their Cards view, meaning the image could be embedded with the text. A simple click or tap of a button would unfold the picture below the text without having to take a user to another window or Web site.

While trying out various clients to recreate this issue, Instagram photos on Twitter’s own applications and Web site did appear as a link where they once showed up as a whole image.

However, when using Tweetbot or Twitterrific on iOS, Instagram images showed up just as they always have. However, these clients may not have used Twitter’s Cards layout.
