[New App] Root Transmission: Root an Android device using your Android Device

One needs to go through a huge process before rooting android devices, it needs time and tests your patience. But now if you wish to root your friend’s device, you just need to plug in your rooted device with their un-rooted device and escape the huge process without touching the computer.

XDA forum member wchill provides a solution to this problem with an app, Root Transmission. Based on Kos’s p2p-adb hacking toolkit (http://hak5.org/episodes/hak5-1205), this app is the only app to let you root and unroot other devices without the need of rooting tools and you don’t even need to use your computer for this procedure.

The procedure to root devices using this app is easy. The rooting process is initiated with transferring the necessary files via USB On-The-Go (OTG)  functionality by connecting the rooted device to the other device via an OTG cable and running the necessary scripts. These scripts are the same scripts which one-click root tools use to root devices using computers.

You need to search for one-click rooting scripts for device you want to root and save that script in the Root Transmission folder – /sdcard/RootTransmission/*devicename*/*version*/. Then the procedure is simple with clicking the ‘Root’ button and the rooting is performed. During the procedure, a terminal window is displayed to let users monitor the procedure as it happens.

But this procedure has its own limitations, the device that you are using to root needs to support USB OTG. Also, you need to have an OTG cable in order to connect the devices.

The developer does state that this version of the app is unstable, leading to occasional force close though these closes won’t break the phone to be rooted.He says,

“Note that this is an UNSTABLE version, and you use this app at your own risk. Occasional force closes are to be expected (though they will most likely not break the phone you are trying to root). Incorrectly written scripts can permanently damage or brick both devices involved, so only use trusted 3rd party root scripts and at your own risk.”

Do ensure that the scripts are correct and from a reliable source, incorrect scripts can permanently damage the devices involved in rooting.

Currently few device are supported by the app, the developer plans to include a list of supported devices, to let users know if their devices are supported or not. The app is still in its developing stages expected to go changes soon, and shall come with new UI and help options to help users.

Note: Devices which need a custom kernel to be flashed during rooting procedure won’t support this app’s procedure. These devices need a zip to be flashed in memory in order to gin root access. In simple words, Root Transmission only works for those devices which have ADB root script.
