Yahoo Unveils New Look For Its Mail Service
What a year it’s been for Yahoo: The company came under fire this spring when some of their largest investors took issue with the brand new CEO’s lies about his collegiate education. Scott Thompson (as well as several other board members and executives) stepped down and in July, ex-Google employee Marissa Mayer stepped in to right the ship.
Since then, Yahoo’s been making headlines as they make changes, killing off some of their less-used features and giving away iPhones to their employees.
Today, Mayer has posted a new blog introducing some new changes to Yahoo Mail. In addition to updating the Android and Web versions of Mail, Yahoo has also released native apps for both Apple’s iOS and Windows 8.
“You’ve told us loud and clear that you want fewer distractions when it comes to email,” writes Mayer in her blog post. “Starting today, the new Yahoo! Mail is fast, easy and available anywhere you go. These improvements will be available on all major platforms: Web, Windows 8, iPhone/iPod touch and Android.”
The new web version of Yahoo mail is said to be much cleaner with an eye towards simplicity and speed. In Fact, Mayer even boasts in her blog post that “getting through your emails is faster than ever before.”
The new Yahoo mail also works to keep a clean and unified look across all platforms. The same Yahoo view seen on an iPhone or Android phone is seen on the web version.
When accessed on an iPhone, the new Yahoo Mail was very quick, responsive and loaded up the inbox quickly. However, the images which were in-line with the text in some of the emails did not automatically fit the page, making the message feel a bit awkward and out of place on the iPhone’s screen.
This isn’t the only time iPhone users have been able to access Yahoo mail natively. iOS has allowed Yahoo mail (and other mail accounts) through Apple’s native Mail app for years. Today’s announcement brings a native Yahoo mail app to the iPhone for those users who prefer Yahoo’s layout or prefer to use a native app for their mail.
Yahoo had a much larger mail presence several years ago before Google introduced Gmail. Now, Yahoo is trying to reclaim some of this lost territory as they keep their eye on Google.
While the new Android, iOS and Windows 8 versions are available today, Mayer writes that users will begin to notice the same changes to their web mail versions in the next few days.
“We encourage you to download the mobile apps, check out the web experience, and give us feedback so we can continue to improve. We’re committed to making Yahoo! Mail everything you want and more, and this is just the beginning,” writes Mayer.
According to Kara Swisher with All Things D, Yahoo will be unveiling a new homepage soon as well.
Swisher says this new homepage will be a more mobile-friendly mix akin to Flipboard or Pinterest. The mobile-leaning Yahoo Mail and homepage are quite intentional. Mayer has made her intentions for her company very clear: “Yahoo will have to be a predominantly mobile company.”
