CES 2013: iPhone Cases Inspired By Lego

Michael Harper for redOrbit.com – Your Universe Online

It’s a simple idea, really, bringing a touch of nerd and plenty of fun to a simple iPhone case. The creative people at SmallWorks in Austin, TX have developed an incredibly clever iPhone case with the help of some popular and beloved toys.

The Smallworks Brickcase essentially acts as a blank Lego platform, connecting to any piece of Lego you can find. Their display at the Las Vegas convention center at CES was quite impressive. There next to an elaborate model jet airplane stood a frightening dinosaur. It was not immediately clear if the dinosaur was meant to ward off any would-be ne’er-do-wells or encourage any passing stranger to pick up the iPhone and play with it in their hands.

As a curious journalist, I couldn’t help but turn the Brickcase-encased iPhone over in my hands. The case is made out of a sturdy ABS material and, like Lego’s themselves, comes in a wide variety of colors.

“But can you really use any Lego piece, or do you make your customers buy your own special Lego pieces?” I asked, suspicious that this case might be little more than a scam to offload millions of unwanted Lego pieces.

The team made it very clear that they had spent many hours ensuring that the cases are built to the exact specifications of all Lego material. In other words, have Brickcase will play. The front lip of the case even extends past the surface of the phone to protect it from scratches. It seems using your iPhone as a Lego platform could lead to several blemishes.

The company has been around for a little over 2 years and, as such, offer cases for the iPhones 4 and 4S as well as older versions of the iPod Touch. They’re newest model fits the newly redesigned iPhone 5 in Black, Blue, Clear, Lime and Red. For added fun, Smallworks has even begun offering a Glow in the Dark Brickcase.

As an added touch of fun, the Brickcase for iPod Touch also uses a smiley face as a camera hole, offering a little something extra for the Kiddos.

The Smallworks site was one of the more fun booths I visited today on the CES showroom floor. They had cases out to try out on your own device, as well as several buckets filled with Lego pieces to get your creative juices flowing. These Brickcases are available now online for only $24.99, a small price to pay for the hours of fun you’ll have.
