Times Internet’s Gaana Launches Mobile Apps
Times Internet, the digital arm of the Times Group has launched mobile apps for its music streaming service, Gaana. The apps are free to download and are available for iOS, Android, Blackberry and Java enabled phones. The company says that Gaana is India’s largest music service on the web. It has around 1 million songs which users can stream now over all the prominent platforms. However, we would like to point out that Dhingana and Saavn already have a one up on Gaana in terms of mobile deployment. Is Gaana late to the party? Clearly they are but they could still pick up in terms of the service provided and the music inventory.
Let’s get a closer look at the apps. I downloaded Gaana on my Android phone and gave it a go. An initial look at the app showed that the app is well designed and has some very good features.
Here are some screenshots.
The app is fairly responsive and looks good doing its job. Users can search through Gaana’s song base and choose songs based on various parameters like Genre, New Releases, Popular and so on. There is an interesting radio mode which lets you relax while the music plays and switches songs automatically. The playback and quality seemed to be good when I tested it on WiFi. You can also create playlists and add songs to them. You can access these songs later from the app in the My Playlist section. There is an option to share your songs on your favorite social mediums. This feature takes advantage of Android’s inter-app sharing feature. This is pretty cool. In addition to this you can choose to listen to public playlists made by Gaana’s users. There were a good number of playlists to choose from. The ‘discover’ feature lets you see what your friends on the service are listening to.
However, the app crashed my phone! The app crashed 3-4 times while I was testing it for half an hour. This shows that app has some bugs. I don’t know if this problem is isolated or occurs over all of Gaana’s apps. I have sent an error report to Google Play.
If you disregard the crashes, the app works well enough although it doesn’t offer many new things. Services like Dhingana and Saavn have already made streaming on the mobile a thing! It is difficult to say how Gaana could eat into their user base.
Give the app a try and let us know what you think.
